2011 Dodge 2500 Cummins crappy MPG

Hey any Cummins guys out there doing anything to get these trucks to get some better MPG's out of them. I have a stock truck with 305/70/17 tires and my mileage is terrible. unloaded I get 12 and pulling the enclosed I get 10 :mmph: I am not looking to do a bunch of performance stuff just want better mileage!! I have seen the EGR delete and the DPF delete and a smarty tuner anyone done these mods and gained good mpg?

Not to bash big or oversized tires but isn't helping ur mileage either. Did all the egr delete , 5"exhaust from turbo back , afe air intake kit h&s minn max tuner get right around 17 on short driving to work high as 23 on long drives empty. Pulling 31' enclosed deck over trailer with 5 sleds and gear gets between 12-14 depending on speed and the wind conditions

I have a 2011 mega cab 285/70/R20, deleted, 5" turbo back, and an h&s mini max on mild setting, ND to MN @ 75-80 mph i can average 18-19, with just the family. i pull a 22'+5' inline all aluminum frame with 4 sleds, gear, guys, plus 100 gals fuel in service tank, i average 11.5-12.5 to Cooke City and back (1100 miles).

Yeah the tires are hurting me but cannot stand the stock ones way to small!! But wanted to see if the deletes and the programmer are worth the money and my Voided Warranty!! Not overly worried on the warranty as I have had zero probs this far besides the stupid TPMS system never working right!

Dan

Delete it. You'll love it . Makes a whole different pickup out of it. If you have an automatic I'd suggest a delete capable minimax for tuning due to the fact of getting their trans tune. There are a lot of options out there. Do your research. Efi is a great option as well. Much easier to get ahold of. Let me know if you have questions.

FYI I'm turning 37" toyos and have gotten 19 hand calculated...

I have a 2012, 285/70/17 tires, 373 gears ..... I average anywhere from 10-15 towing, I get ~17 on the highway @ 75, ~19 @ 65 unloaded with it.

I'd love to delete mine, but since I have to pass an emissions test that isn't an option for me unfortunatley :(

2012 3500 mega cab limited.. 35'' hankook tires with 5'' turbo back afe exhaust, s&b cold air intake, h&s fuel rail plug, h&s mini maxx with pyro.
get 11.7L per 100km doing 101km on my escort radar detector gps.. as I did not calibrate truck for bigger tires. I wanted the extra warranty and keeps the milage down a bit when time to sell but truck is 10% out..
the mileage is calculated between fuel ups always at the same station.
truck has always ran diesel power plus fuel conditioner and amsoil 5W40 with ams oil filter every 8000km. fuel filer every 16000km. pulling my 9500lb holiday trailer 34ft long I got 16-18l per 100km doing 104k hour..
doing 120-130 sled deck and tool box under it I get same as pulling trailer

Not to start a pi$$in match, but actually if you do a lot of highway driving, taller tires can help your mileage as it lowers your cruising RPM.

Yes and no.
Hwy tread vs mud terrain.
My 315/75 16 toyo m/t get me 15.75 mpg at 75mph empty.
My 285/75 16 hankook atm get me 17.9 mpg at 75 mph empty.
Hand calculated with corrected speedo.

Been there and done that and it does not. They have all got a couple miles less per gallon. I keep hearing about these magical trucks that get 21-24 with 37's.
On a side note, I know a guy that had an 11 and all it would get was 7 empty. It was brand new and all stock. He threw a bunch of mods at it and I havn't talked to him since. I would have gave it back to dodge and got a different one.

Go to http://www.cumminsforum.com

You have two options. Delete or trade for a 13 or 14. I've read very good fuel mileage reports from those with 13s and 14s. I would say 2-4 mpg better is the norm.

Deletes work well if u don't have inspections in your state.

Also switching to a lighter less aggressive tire helps. 285/70r17 all terrain would help ur mileage

Careful with the right foot in the winter, let it get good and warm before getting on the throttle in the higher power levels (or do head studs) to save your headgasket. I toasted one and ever since I turn my power level down to tow unless I'm on a trip.

My '11 with 285 tires and all the delete's will only max out at 18 on a very good day, average is right around 16 @ 70mph empty. Sucks, my '07 with the exact same setup would get 20 easy.

I have an 08 Megacab auto trans with 35 mud's. Was not happy with mpg from the start and had lots of problems so at 5k miles I did the deletes and turbo back 5" from Rollin smoke with the Smarty. This bumped me from the 13's upto mid to high 15's. As I put more miles on the millage crept up and would get maybe 17mpg empty freeway. At 30k I started having problems with coolant, after many shops and just biting the bullet it turned out to be a head gasket. Common with the smarty tuner(too much timing?) . Did studs and switched to the Minimax, soon to add their trans tune. This bumped me up and now get 19mpg freeway and mid 17's city.
As said before be very careful with these tuners as they ad massive torque to an engine that has lots to start with. I wish I would have done a tuner with transmission tuning to start with. I don't pull a lot so it's not load abuse it is just a lot of power going through the drive system.
Lots of luck

Yup been reading that but should be fine as I am not going for the power end of things just economy. I have my toys to beat the crap out of, need my truck to be reliable so its not in the back of my head.

Look into the draconian diesel custom tunes for the mini maxx. Most guys on cummins forum have been claiming a pretty good mileage increase over the stock h and s tuning. Like has been said before, head studs are always a good idea to save your head gasket

Thanks guys, Going with a Mini Maxx programmer, deletes, and turbo back exhaust!

make sure its a RACE tuner and not a street tuner. you cannot delete with a street tuner. they look the same but have different software on them

i have my 12 cummins deleted and i dont get no 20+ mpg like some say. my dash may show it quite often, but actual hand calculated MPG is more in the 16-18 range. i have gotten better on longer heading towards the eastern part of ND where its flatter, but i dont expect it all that often. if you are diving over constant rolling hills, and usually wind, i wouldnt expect over 17. i have the MCC software and can customize tunes. i have even paid a tuner to make me "mileage" tunes and i dont get no 20 mpg on a regular basis.

i have not pulled a sled trailer yet. i get 10 mpg pulling my 11000 lb 5th wheel (the dash shows closer to 12). compare that to 7.5-8.5 when it was stock. plus it pulls a hell of alot better. my custom towing tune i have is injecting less fuel than the H&S tow tune (which claims 60 hp over stock) and it pulls like a beast compared to stock or H&S' tow tune. the custom tuning is where its at with these things IMO. remember the guy who started EFI live (ryan millikan). im sure you have heard of EFI BY RYAN. well, he is doing H&S now. he has MCC by RYAN.

i have alot of money into the tuner and custom MCC tuning, but she runs good now. i will never make my money back in fuel mileage unless i drive it for 15 years, nor wiill i win any drag races because the tunes are written for towing, but she pulls like 800 ft/lb torque diesel should

i started using a fuel mileage tracking website earlier this fall http://www.fuelly.com/driver/bocephus/ram-2500. this is a log of my unloaded miles. i dont have any long trips on it yet since i started this log. i live in a rural area, bum around the ranch with it, drive it 15 miles to work every now and then. as you can see the mileage is nothing special, but in comparison to what i was getting before i deleted/tuned it, im consistently getting 2-4 mpg better.

i went to yellowstone park with the camper on vacation towards the end of summer. this is the fuel log from that http://www.fuelly.com/driver/bocephus/ram-2500-1
