Spring is broken.. simple to replace.
I am surprised that it seems to working fine. whenever I broke a spring, engagement was low & seemed boggy.

Weird that I can't sense anything wrong?
Thanks for the response.
Do you just pull that outer cover off and a new spring just sits in there, or is there more parts involved?

Yes, just loosen the bolts equally and there will be a little spring pressure so hold the cover on as you do the final few turns of the bolts.

I remove one bolt from each tower, then back out the remaining ones evenly.

Spring on my 2010 M8 is, iirc, yellow with white stripe.

Thanks, this one is dark gray or black? Did notice the replacement spring was listed as yellow / white.
Sled runs so well right now I'm afraid to change something!
Thanks

clutch guard should list clutch setup for your altitude...$30 fix it before it chews up the clutch and leaves you stranded....

Spring

Hard to tell what the spring is by the photo. Look really carefully at it and you should be able to locate some numbers or letters on it. Don't know the history of the sled but there are several different companies that make springs so you could have any number of springs on it depending on if it is stock or has been modified. Look at the numbers on the spring as well as the colors on it and that should be a big help.

Chatted with another dealer today, thought for 6000-9000' it calls for an orange black spring. But Im not sure if it's modified? I can see some orange spots on it?
I'm confused though as I can't see or feel the other shearded off end of the spring, its like its the end of the spring?
Thanks

Take the cover off and look. Mine looked the same but still seemed to work.

I think the yellow/white was a factory recommendation to smooth out engagement. I just got done calibrating (adding spring and weights) to a new clutch and the yellow/white was the spring default on the parts fische for my 10.

The left side of the chart on ur sled is for the primary clutch and the right side is secondary clutch. For the primary there is no spring change for elevation, oem anyway.

Get a Thunder ABC kit and glide washers to prevent this

Spring

Based on your pictures it looks like the stock Orange/Black spring. You will need to take the cover off to see. Like it says above make sure you mark the cover and get it back on exactly how it was. Even though you can't find the other end, it is definitely broken. The spring should be flat on the ends. You will see when you take it off. It's an easy fix. 10mm socket if memory serves.

You are 100% correct, thanks. Took the cover off, broke! Still amazed it ran well.
How do I find the arctic cat black orange? Local dealer (guy that operates the phones at the service desk.....said it needed yellow / white which is what parts books say and is back ordered until late march), not the orange black which I'm learning is the right one for 6000-9000 mt sleds. No help there. Trying to get the shop tech to look into it and maybe he can get me the right one.
Wasted a lot of time on this..... Frustrating

if I remember correctly, cat had issues with the M series and the black orange spring. they now call for the yellow/white. guessing the issue was the spring would break... hence your issue. put the yellow white in there. or contact speedwerx and order an h5 spring with the same start and finish rate of the orange black, if you think you must have the orange black spring. Ski

It should be the Y/W, I believe they dropped the black one because of them breaking. Be sure to keep the cover indexed with the spider, they are marked but you may want to use a marker pen just to be sure.

Good thing to mention... but previous owner could have put it back together incorrectly indexed (voice of experience :face-icon-small-dis)... so it's probably best to find the index marks.

Thanks for the help. Local dealer tech checked the broken spring and said the same as the last few posts here. Cat had trouble with the black orange (breaking...) and now reccomend yellow white. Local shop did not have the spring....Got lucky and another AC shop , granite motor sports, put one in the mail immediately, got it yesterday and put it in today. Seems to engage ok, will see for sure next time I get out.
The thanks again for all the input.
