2010 M8 break in

Alright, I just picked up my new toy for the winter. Finally converted from a Crossfire to a true mountain sled. I can't wait to test it out for real instead of just the ditches here in Iowa. Anyway, I talked to the mechanic at the dealer I bought it from about break in for this motor. He said to not worry about adding oil to the gas any more. Just run it at variable throttle positions and run it like you stole it. Everyone agree with that? If not, what mix should I use.

I wouldn't listen to the dealer on that unless he wants to put that in writing.

Add a few ounces of oil to the first tank. Cat also calls for a couple heat cycles, which is entirely common place for 2 strokes. My dealer actually heat cycles them prior to letting them go by running them till the temp light comes on, lets it cool completely, then does it again. Oh, and puts oil in the tank.

If they are sure you do not have a air bubble in the oil line I agree. BUT>>>..if you do, not good. Mark your oil level and check for usage for the first 10-15 miles. If no usage you are in trouble. Problem we had was the oil pump not returning to a idle setting and making the motor pig rich on oil. Good for break-in,sucks for normal riding. Adding oil to the tank leans the fuel mix but I do it anyway, just take it easy on the first two tanks untill oil is flushed out. Also on new motors I have been dis-connecting oil pump lever and wireing it at wide open for first 20-30 miles, then reconnecting it. ruins plugs and muck's up exhaust valves but is good for break-in...IMO...enjoy your new ride..Garry

he may have told you that because he already added the oil to the gas

Where did you see Cat recommend the heat cycling? Just curious.
