2010 dragon 800 goes down

new with 200 miles on it and riding up the trail just 3 miles short of the cabin at about half throttle and just bogs and dies. take it back to the dealer who says we ran it out of oil but it was filled every day and was almost full when it died (it was filled and then rode 10-15 miles). then he told us that we used the wrong oil but it had polaris ves II gold (full synthetic). any other people having the problem or might have some insight?

Sounds like you need a new dealer... claiming you had the wrong oil in it? I know they have the gold PLUS oil out there now, but what about the 2008 and 2009's before that PLUS oil came out... like mine.

Plus for break-in of the update kit they say to put in the Polaris Blue semi-synth. Which I did. Drained the VES gold and put the blue in.

It could be your oil pump failed... but the mid-range part-throttle area has been the problem lean area I understand...

Did your D8 die (like blown motor) or die (like can't get it started)? Those are two very different things right now. If you can't get it to start, it is probably rich and your plugs are fouled. Curious post with only 2 posts on your belt.

no the motor is done. It turns over if you pull it but very slowly and very stiff (its all i can do to get it to turn). I know i dont have many posts but i usually just spectate. This is just such a wild issue and the fact that the dealer has come up with these reasons and i know otherwise i was looking to see if anyone else has had any other issues. Another dealer farther away said theyve had to warranty a few 2010 800s as a result of imporoper oiling from the pump due to the spyder gear being squeezed to tight.

the stock map is EPA lean and will very likely cause seizures in extreme conditions. We all need to add fuel precisely where I think the EPA needs leanest mixture to pass whatever. Anyone with an old PCIII or a new PCV I can email the proper map to cure that lean midrange, just email me at info@dynotechresearch.com with your DTR user ID and password, or if you have no PC yet I can deliver new PCVs mapped properly for whatever exhaust you have to smooth out the midrange and also add 10-12hp on top.

Jim, his sled is a 2010 so wouldn't it have the richened map that all the updates have now? I know the 2008/2009 (pre-updated) sleds were very rich in the midrange and it would make sense for those sleds to burn down.

Lean in midrange

2008 and 2009s were lean in the midrange and rich on top. The 2010s are leaner yet in the midrange and if you hold it at 6000 rpm part throttle it will burn down without even tripping the det sensor. The new Polaris reflash is supposed to help the midrange and reduce the sensitiity of the det sensor, that is coming soon.

actually the 10 update currently available is richer in the midrange then last season..and slightly leaner on the top end..at least mine is...I think most with severe runability problems have other issues that need to be dealt with(IE....voltage regulator, ecm, egt sensor..Tps sensor, as well as other things...)..adding a fuel controller is a bandage until the other issues are delt with on the ones with serious runability problems....:beer;:beer;

I agree with AK. And the dealer should be able to "figure out" or make an educated guess as to why it failed. If it's lack of lubrication and it has the right oil then it seems like the dealer doesn't know what to do? Head for a new dealer if you can, if he can't find a problem you will likely get another failure.

AK is right on the money with this!!!

There are too many variables with our 8s that need addressed before we start moving on to additional products.

For 1..... I do not believe we should pay $360 to get out 10-12 hp back. Now I believe the PC is an awesome product, not saying anything against it, and definately not saying DT Jim isn't doing what he can to provide us with the best map. BUT... most of us that have had issues are just happy that the machine are running "better" so we have accepted the 10hp lose for the time being. Eventually I want it back!!!

Along with this Polaris NEEDS to resolve the VR issue. Wether that meansbuilding a quality VR or seperating the VR and Rectifier duties then so be it.

In the mean time if we can band together to find a DIY protection product for our ECU then we can at least protect that long enough to change it on the trail or get back to the truck. I like everyone else knows what it feels like to be down a revene when the machine quits. Need confidence in my machine once again!!!

My 08 dragon wasnt using enough oil from day one the dealer told me they dont use a lot of oil So at six houndred miles blew a belt thought i had all the strings out of the clutch went down the road 10 miles and the crank bearing went out.

Took it to the dealer and and had them check the oil pump while fixing the bearing and what do u know the pump was bad. Go figure one problem to save another.

VR & ECU Failures

Ron, Don't you know the guys at Carls Cycle pretty well? Have you heard of any possible diy repairs to protect the ecu & the engine when the VR fails? You always have some insight so I thought I would ask.

Got it torn down now. The gear that runs the pump is fine and they havent torn the pump itself apart yet, but the bottom bearing on the mag side is f'd. there is oil in all the lines from the pump to both sides and the other crank bearing is fine. The dealer wont let me take it to another dealer that has already told us they would warranty it unless i pay for the labour that hes done now. so obviously its a lube problem since the pistons are "fine" so it wasn't the burn down problem but the tank was full of polaris gold.

most likely that bearing got shrapnel from a previous burndown/scuffed piston...just a guess without seeing it but would make sense......

Oil pumps bad and good luck getting one. I took my sled in for the third time January 14th and still Polaris has not sent the part. Other things that have gone wrong for me are voltage regulator, and a wire was grounding out in the electrical box. I bought my sled new in October 2010. 2010 800 Polaris dragons suck I hope you have a backup sled.

Same story here. Dealer tech showed me some sample pictures that had pistons looking like mine that were listed as "no oil" for the failure.

That said, check out my thread here CLICKY for some pics and additional info. Maybe if one of us can pin an issue down for sure the rest can benefit. Good luck, sorry about your issue. EW
