2010-13 YZ450F vs 2014+ YZ Dedicated Snow Bike

Just a heads up I have seen almost every snow bike with the GYTR head blow around here , supposedly they have fixed the problem, but no one here will have one again :face-icon-small-dis to much trouble to loose an engine in the middle of the season.

Stock or walk with a race bike..........

What was the issue I never heard anything about it? I can see the high comp single ring piston not being durable enough for a snowbike but basically the motor will be stock below the head.

Single ring piston

Not quite the same but i just installed (had installed) a cylinder works (vertex) cylinder and high compression piston on my bike. 13.5 I think. I did the cylinder because after adding up the piston, gaskets, etc. it was only a couple hundred more to get the complete cylinder kit. The stock cylinder and piston that came out looked really good but I didn’t measure anything. Bike has 99 hrs and hopefully I’ll get at least that much again this year. I didn’t realize it was only a single ring piston when I ordered it. Has me a little worried but too late now. Hopefully will be fine. Guess I’ll know more by next summer ?

I pulled the trigger on a new Camso for the YZ. In keeping with the dollars vs performance nature of this build it seemed like the best value. I've ridden the kit and its an easy ride which is what I am after so people on the bike don't get turned off, its too bad is so fugly though. Maybe I can put some lipstick on it.

Congrats! I’m looking at the same setup for my 13 YZ. Waiting on my new piston kit to get in for a little pre-season refresher. I’ve heard that Camso came out with some graphics templates this year. I also heard of a company that makes a replacement “tunnel top” cover for these monsters- can’t recall the name tho....?

I'll have to wait and see how it is all put together but a new top is on my list of maybes. I've built lots of sled tunnels over the years I know I can do it but is it worth it. I'll wait and see I guess. I should have the kit in a week or so.

So I've finally gotten around to doing some work on the YZ. Here are some pics of the GYTR cams vs. stock and the GYTR head vs Stock. Lots more parts to install yet.

The old cams are on top of the race cams. They have less lift. I started it today for the first time with the GYTR parts installed. I haven't ridden it because its pitch black outside but it revs super quick, instant on and seems to start much easier, probably due to valve adjustment. I'll go for a ride tomorrow on the wheels then start the kit install.

So here is the way I'm going to try it for now. No time for a wrap so its kind of a blank canvas. I will see how long the plastics survive which for me usually isn't very long. I fabbed up a new tunnel top for the Camso so I can adjust my chains without having to disassemble the whole back end. I can carry any fuel can I choose as well. I'd really like to find a nice 15L can.

I still need to get a tool box, the Pelican style one I bought is too big to fit between the number plates. Maybe a good bag. I made air vents for the intakes on both sides plus I screened and vented the stock intake ports. No time to make my heated bars yet so it'll be the trusty muffs for the next few weeks.

I had the mongo Camso brake lever installed but I just couldn't do it so I replaced it with the adjustable stocker.

The blue seat has to go, I will get something better soon. I'm busy writing maps now for the GYTR head and cams. The bike was pretty snappy on it test ride so I will be playing with the tuner quite a bit.

Sorry about the sideways pics my phone seems to rotate them and I'm too lazy to edit all my pics.

If you ever want to make any more of those tunnel covers I would be totally interested. That's too notch m5

I, too, am digging on those tunnel covers. They look great.

If there is one good thing about the monstrosity that is the brake lever is that one really never needs it. I don't remember pulling mine once on Saturday.

A couple of my buddies with Camso kits asked me if I'd build more tunnel tops. I'm honestly not sure it would be cost effective to do what I have done on mine as there is a fair bit of breaking, welding and finishing in it. I have the templates now so the hard part is done but even so. I think a simpler more doable option would be to whack the plastic cover off right behind the bolts and for me to just fab up the back half plate, snow flap and rack along with powder coat in whatever color a guy wanted. I would also likely make a block off plate in black for the end of the plastic front half if that makes sense. It would be a bolt on kit and a lot cheaper. I could do basically any color of powder as the guys I use stock a huge array of colors. A guy could drill the holes for the chain tension adjusters in the plastic cover same as I have in mine and also make an inspection port in the side for chain tension measurement. The chain case side of mine unbolts for this purpose.

I guess it would come down to what do you think its worth cost wise.

After removing the stock Camso plastic panel you are left with quite a bit of silver/grey color. I think some striping or graphics running lengthwise would go a long way to streamlining the looks. I guess I could get a custom wrap but looking at my 500's plastics it might be cheaper to tape $5 bills onto the bike and watch them get torn off on the trees throughout the day.

Maybe I will look at building some kits in the new year if there is enough interest but tomorrow I'm going riding for the next three weeks so it can wait.

Love this idea! I'm pretty sure I could get away with $20 bills and still come out ahead. :face-icon-small-hap

When you find yourself sliding down that steep tree line pushing like crazy with your right foot for a brake lever that isn’t there (even though your track is already locked up from your hand brake). You will be wishing that brake lever did a bit more. A locked up track is really no match for gravity. You might also think to yourself...hmmm maybe this is what those guys were talking about on that handguard thread
