2009 M8 Diamond Drive Teardown

I am in the middle of tearing down the dd on my 09 M8 with reverse. I will post pictures later, but I thought I would just let you guys know that the bearing has failed and I have a lot of loose metal in the gearcase. This sled has under 400 miles...
I thought about just flushing the fluid and just riding the thing, but man I am glad I tore into it and am replacing the bearing.

Use the double wide 5203 Bearing when you replace it.

How do the gears look?

Good thing you tore into it.

That should be a recall seems like it is happening lots, i hear it isn't a issue on the 08. Can anyone confirm this and can you tell me what bearing is in the 08 i cant seem to find it? Thx and not meaning to hijack backnblack.

Could you maybe post pics and maybe do a little how to? I got my DD out of my 09 m8 right now and I'd love to tear into it

It's super easy, take the top off the DD. Grab the lower gear and pull up. The bearing in question should be attached to the underside of the bottom gear.

I got as far as tearing into it and cleaning everything up. I do not have a gear puller to get the shot bearing off of the shaft. i would have loved to post pictures tonight, but it does not look like I will have it finished start to finished.
It is super easy as posted above, just pull the cover off first. then pull the next gear assembly out. You may have to turn it a little bit, but it should just pull right out. On the assembly that you just pulled, look on the back of the shaft and you will see the bearing and spacer in question. If it is like mine, you will have no problem recognizing the shot bearing.
I pulled the keeper rings out and continue pulling the planetary out so that I could get all of the schrapnel out and clean it out good.
That is as far as I have gotten.
Look at an exploded view of the gear case and it may make more sense to you.

It's too bad they don't do more r&d before making sleds....Thanks for the info and ditto on hearing if that bearing is an issue on the 08's as well. Thanks fellas:beer;

shouldn't be a problem on the 08, the shim in the planetary seems to be the week spot in the 07-08. bdx is trying some straight cut gears to help with this.

I just did my oil in my DD before I stored it so i;m guessing I should b fine, but if she blows i got warrenty

FYI, when I drained the oil out of my dd, no metal chunks were coming out. It wasn't until I opened the case that I found the failure.

It is really simple to get into.

What I should have done was pulled the case, seen the damage and taken it to my dealer for warranty....

still take in

i would still take it in in my experience with all that material going through the planet something had to happen in there even if minor you paid for warranty let them install updated bearing then ur covered.
