2009 dragon 800 IDLE PROBLEM

got a 2009 dragon with the 2010 updated motor and ecu flash.. took it out west and it would idle good in parking lot, up to 6000'.. after i get up into 7000' or 8000' it would struggle to idle, thought maybe cause it was starving for air that my dash vents were plugged with snow. NOPE all vents are cleaned off no snow in airbox. get back down to parking lot, idles fine. not to metion the sled rocked when i was riding it. running a pc5 with pipe blah blah blah. so i get back home take it to dealer and tell them whats goin on. They say the new flash as of jan 14 will take care of that. start talking about idle and adjusting the tps. so they take it in try to adjust tps and they tell me my tps sensor is pooched. so wait 4 days for a sensor, get it in and I go to pick it up, take it home. sitting there idling it's idling at 2400rpm. WEIRD so i figure oh maybe it's cold, sits in heated garage overnight, start it in morning... same thing 2400. wtf. take it for a rip and it runs flawless so figure maybe my tps needs to be set. take it in. they try to adjust the tps and they said doesn't matter what we do to tps the idle wont change. they also say that one throttle body is blowing and one is sucking.. never heard of that before. so they want to change the base gasket on mag side. which i dont understand why sitting in shop first they didnt see the base gasket leaking before and why did it idle fine at 1500' to 5000'. so now im waiting back to hear from they this afternoon to see if they got the problem fixed. Also i sent the service manager the forum thread about setting the tps sensor. anyway i'll let you know how i make out with it..ANYONE else with a idle trouble chrip up because i have been reading about people with the idle problem. THANKS

my brothers 08 d8 with 10 update wouldnt hardly idle, took it apart and set the tps, idles better until you turn the bars to the left and it dies...? wtf? checked out the cable looks good so what now, definately not taking it to our local stealership

idle

Mine idles low, didn't get the Jan 14 update. Carl's said to screw the throttle adjustment in and little. I wonder if yours is screwed in too far. It's an Allen set screw with a lock nut around it and only way to get to it is pull the air box. 08s had a knob. Product improvement I guess.

Between me and my boys we have 4 dragons, 1 700 and 3 800's. The TPS baseline settings were out on all four sleds. Baseline setting should be .710 +/- .01 and sled 1 was .692, 2 was .687, 3 was .733 and sled 4 was the reason we decided to check any of them as the idle was irregular with elevation so I had the local dealer check the TPS and found it away out (suppose to be green line if within specs but it was red half way across there laptop screen). They set it and the idle was at 2250 rpm. It was closing time so I took back to my shop and discovered the throttle bodies were out of sync a turn and a half. The sled now runs great, not without thanks to kraven and all others that post an absolute warehouse of knowledge on these forums.:wine::wine::wine:

08 D8 same tps problem after 2010 update. Dealer reflashed and I got 5.3 miles and lost pto side bottom rod bearing. If you have warranty and problems remove pipe before you take for work. Polaris told me to piss off for the repair. my cost. word to the wise!!! piped ...no warranty!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Missing Information

I typically run my 08 D8 between 7600 -9000 ft. gradually over time it has had a rough time holding idle. I have not had the piston recall work done yet. It used to start and idle nicely at 1450 -1500. Now it takes 2 -3 pulls and you have to babysit the throttle for 2-3 minutes and when it idles, it does so at 1550-1600 with the skiis shaking lots more than before. How do you check the tps settings? Does anyone have neophite instructions?:face-icon-small-dis

T.p.s. Setting

check out the INCREASING YOU IQ thread at the top of this section,(LOTS OF GREAT USEFUL/HELPFUL INFO POSTED IN THERE)
TECH TIPS THREAD and the T.P.S. VIDEO IN THE "900 SECTION"

From Mountainhorse:

Baseline setting is what Carls is referring to (above in the description)

The baseline calibration IS with the throttle plates closed. This is an independent adjustment of both TB's.

THEN you adjust the TPS to the closed throttle plates at :
900/755 CFi .705 - .715 volts (I shoot for the middle at .710)
600/700/800 CFi 0.70 +/- 0.01 Vdc.

After the baseline is done... THEN you open the throttle plates with the Idle screw to:
755/800/900 CFi .930 volts
600/700 CFi .950 volts
Both +/- .01 volts
... lock it down (I like to use low strength wick-n-lock locktite on this screw after it is locked down.

I just did one on last night with my home-made TPS tester... it took me about 10 minutes once I got to the TB's.

I've done this on many sleds... a lot of them new.... that were off by a long shot. Helped to clean up the throttle response on those that were off.

If you have a little patience, the factory tester (or the homade one) and a multimeter, this is one of the least inimidating processes on the sled... Just follow the video that I posted up.

ALSO as a side note... I had to go thru a couple of regulators at radio shack until I found a good 5.00 vdc regualtor... most were out of spec.

I made another tester for a friend and found that my local computer parts house had better quality reguators that were spot on.

I helped a guy locally last year that was having a real hard time with his new Dragon 700... The TPS sensor had some internal problems that would not show up in the baseline calibration it was more mid range... I put an old school analog meter on the output and found it had a dead spot internally that was causing the problem...this is hard to spot with a digital meter. I first do an idle to WOT (slowly) with an analog meter to verify that the TPS itself is good and shows a smooth voltage increase.. then I do the full baseline calibration... I had a spare TPS with me and got him up and running in the parking lot.

The TPS setting method for the CFi's is NOT the same as the carbed sleds and should not be used with the CFi motors.

JUST TO CLARIFY, THROTTLE BLADES fully closed= IDLE SCREW TOTALLY BACKED OFF!!!!!!!!

Hope this helps
