2008 REV XP 154 Yep my driver shaft broke too :(

Why would Ski Doo use a hollw drive shaft in the first place (save weight)??????? How can they improve on that design unless they put a solid shaft in?

A hollow shaft can be much stronger if designed and built properly. Sounds like they should either welded it better or made the coupling longer or both.

I don't think welding these things is the answer. Putting any kind of tack weld on the shaft that has torsional and also side loads applied to it is just asking for more problems. The stub shaft idea works fine on a drive line on our vehicles, only because there is only a twisting force applied to it not a side load force. Ski doo needs to do a "Root cause failure analysis" on these shafts and come up with something better or start helping the people get these broke down sleds back to the trailer..... JMO

Yeah BRP will do that, some enginner smoking a big fatty will declare "looks like it hit a pinecone" Warranty void.

Skidoo has stated that the reason for these breakage problems was they had a welder set up at the wrong angle on a few of these shafts. they also had a bad batch of steel with to much sulfur in it, and if both of these items were on one shaft that those are the ones that will break. and yes they break right next to the weld and part of the shaft is still attached to the machined part. spot welding will work and can be easily done on the sled. please check out my belt changing tool on ebay it works great...item#220214461197

Friend's 154x driveshaft bananna pealed Lookout Mtn, Priest Lake, 3-22-08. His dealer assured him he had one of the good ones!

Been stung by first year sled already 05RMK900

As I was wrenching on my sled for the bizillionth time this year.... Thinking I was ready to snow check a new sled.... XP cause I've been riding the IQ since 05.... I have been impressed with the performance of the Xp's... But the lack of D8's on the mountain to confirm king of the hill is a bit of an issue for me..... Arctic Cat may be a strong runner next year..???? Etc. Etc...

Then out of the blue my buddy phoned me last night and told me his trackshaft just failed on him..... He managed to get it towed out....... He's also has worn out his clutch's this year... This year being 3 months...... Doesn't this motor/clutch's have two years on them....???

I know first year sleds are an issue..... Just not sure if a second year sled is worth taking the chance's on either...... I'm almost forced to wait till 2010 and see how the shoot out's go next year..... Then probably have to avoid another first year sled.....

Just thought I'd document this failure on word of mouth and that it happened to my friend..... and not a friend of a friend who saw a guy that said he heard from....... I love those kind of testaments instead of first person... LOL J.K.

My friend doesn't even have a computer.... so this one's for you Guido!!!

First Year Fun

:beer;:beer;:beer;Being a DOO lover and all this is a tough post, but i knew it was only a matter of time... A buddy of mine and I both had 04 800's, he sold his and bought a xp 163 I kept mine and told him I didn't want to be a first year guinea pig. We are both 200+ and ride hard jump anything and everything, well he hasn't had a chance to ride a lot this year, but unfortunately he did ride enough. At 280 miles he jumps into a blow hole by accident doesn't think he hits that hard grabs the Gas and goes nowhere.

At this point we are about 20 miles from the truck but two big hills prevent a tow out, so we park it under some trees and start tearing it apart. A week later we go back in with parts and the right tools and spend 2 hours of a sunny day standing in a foot of fresh pow putting the POS back together.

I love the sled and I really hope that DOO gets the problems fixed so I don't get to enjoy anymore of the mountain mechanics.

The worst part is that we got it put together and rode for the 6 hours only to blow a motor in a XP 154 (260 miles) and park it in the same spot!!!!

Not sure on the prognosis only that the guys from the dealership were headed in with a new motor to bring it out. It was the owners sled that blew up. Motor went just like when the cranks go out of the 07 800's. I would hate to have to go buy a M8 and call it the more durable sled.
I've spent my whole life bagging on all my buds that ride them!!!

The one thing I haven't heard much about is blown motors. This is about that 3rd I have heard about which is unfortunate if it yours and your way out back but it doesn't seem to be near the same as the 07 or as near as bad as the other problems with the XP's

Add me to the list of broken driveshafts...

Had my driveshaft blow apart last week, close to 600 miles of HARD riding on sled...20 mile tow to get her out...almost sacrificed 2 other sleds over the edge of a mountain during the process...

Dealership says the cause is a high content of sulfer in the metal...no way to track which sleds are the ticking timebombs. Hopefully the new driveshaft holds...Dealership also said welding is not the answer. So far, 10% of XP's sold at this dealership have had the driveshaft blow...I guess BRP isn't going to make this a serious recall until someone dies from their faulty driveshaft issue...

On a good note, I installed a DJ clutch kit. Wow! Definatelly worth the cash!

polaris has used them for years with no problems! part of the problem and this is with all brands! they out source parts! and that was part of doos problem this year, and last year! hey brp! stop buying from china and mexico. support north american made!

welding is the answer. if you want to ride. welded mine at 500 miles now 1500 mine had not spun. ephartafarmer had his break 550 miles he welded it up now has 3300 miles on it.talked to the skidoo rep at jackson he said there will be no need to weld the shafts next year. he also said that there was approx 2% failure rate and welding before they spin or break would take care of most of the problems. most dealers will do this for you.
