2008 ford f-250 with a 5.4

Yep, nothing better than a brand war. Who cares about the 6.0 and 8.1, is that what the guy asked about? NO

Ford fitted new 3 valve heads to the SD trucks gas engines starting in 2005. That is why the '05 and up V10 has a decent power rating, prior to that I don't think I would be interested.

The 5.4 is pretty underrated by most people. Fact is it has great low end torque compared to the GM offerings. Part of what the GM guys are missing is that the Ford truck itself wieghs about 800 lbs more than the comparable GM. So when you guys are out racing your trucks (haha) if you run a chevy vs a Ford you better have the crew cab filled with fat friends to make it an even comparison of engines.

I have towed with all three diesels, the Dodge Hemi, and the 8.1 in 3/4 or 1 ton trucks. The smaller gassers are going to make less power, big surprise. The 5.4 will easily tow a 4 place and the milage will be poor no matter which you choose. If it is a clean truck I would buy one with a 5.4. That engine will go 300k miles easy. Sure it will be a little slow, but its a truck, so who cares.

If you say anything positive about Ford, the GM lovers instantly put their hands over their ears & start yelling "la la la la la la la la la la la la, I can't hear you, I can't hear you, I can't hear you, I can't hear you!"

Actually no, all of them were built this way. And its a pretty well known everified by almost any number of dyno tests, what GM has officially listed their Gen III small blocks at under SAE standards .... usually comes out at the wheels, not the crank .... pretty well known they under rate them.

So in other words, ford wasn't even RATING the V10 to be what the 8.1L was until 2005 .... and, it didn't make peak power until 4200 rpm or something like that .... the 8.1L makes peak power @ 3200 ....

And as many have said above as well ... I don't care what Ford's ratings on their motors are on paper, in the real world they don't perform as well as the GM motors do in the real world ... So I'm thinking that GM under rates their motors, and ford probably rates theirs spot on, because I don't know anyone who has actually spent any seat time in both trucks who say the GM gassers don't out power the Fords.

With that said, I'm not bashing Ford, my next truck will be an F250 or F350 .... but it won't be a gasser.

GM makes the best motors out there .... too bad they were recently taken over by communists :(

Im refering to your post about the 8.1 out pulling a duramax. Thx for making your self look silly. GM rating there motors all the same would show you that the duramax makes more tq faster for longer. If you were unaware tq is the power that you pull with.

i dont care how silly everyone thinks i look its a fact with the two pickups we have had not sayin that is the way it should be but thats the way it is with our 2 trucks......is their a lemon with snowmobile mmm yes so can their be a lemon with vehicles.....mmm yes so maybe thats the way it is

I still don't agree with you about the 5.4L being under-rated, but I agree with you that they flat out last forever. Its an excellent work truck motor, thats for sure.

I thought you were comparing the 8.1L to the Ford V10, not the Duramax. I stated above an 8.1L wouldn't out pull a Duramax .....

Sorry, I misunderstood your post.

Alright folks, This is supposed to be about the 5.4 FORD gas motor... there is no reason to bring the 8.1 or the duramax into this discussion.

Please TRY to keep it on track here:face-icon-small-win

I drive a 2009 F350 with the 5.4, turned 157,500 miles yesterday.

Traveled 1100 miles the last 2 days pulling an open car trailer, loaded, about 7000 pounds. 10.1 MPG running 65-75 mph with some snow, so I lock it into 4-wheel drive and run it locked in at highway speeds. It will go as fast as you want it just has to work hard. Change oil, tranny fluid and tires since it was new, never touched the brakes yet. It will be ready to roll again next week. This truck has had a trailer behind it or a plow on the front since day 1.

Gas mileage varies and I've seen 6-8 mpg pulling an F150 or Super Duty on the trailer. Most round trips it is in the 8-10 mpg range and round trips are 500 miles up to 1800 miles.

When I'm driving down the freeway ramp my foot is to the floor and any hill, put er to the floor. This truck has been worked.

I kinda thought the same thing when my brother first got his V10. They aren't as snappy as the 496 big block, but once we towed the exact same trailer up a hill it was very obivious the V 10 was stronger. Kinda seems to be the way most Ford motors work, even the 5.4. Not really as snappy feeling as the GM's, but they do very well when weight is applied.

We must have had a dog 6.0 cause ours really was terrible. Liked our other GM's gassers way better.

I'm sorry, I have to laugh at the post made about the 496 out pulling a duramax, I think we've had 4 6.6l and they all pulled much better than the 8.1....BUT, the 8.1's were only about 10 mph slower with the same loads up a hill. Very impressive for what they were, just not quiet as good as a newer V10. Sorry guys, but it's the truth!:face-icon-small-coo

I really think a 5.4 would do just fine if your not looking to be heavily loaded day in and day out. And when you think about it, most of the time your pulling sleds in poor driving/road conditions anyway, so who cares how much faster one's vehicle goes than anothers when your only driving 40 mph on ice anyway.

I've never driven a V10 that I thought held a candle to my 8.1L.
