The Alpha X is really for big HP sleds to keep the nose down so if you don't plan on putting a turbo on it the regular Holz would be just fine I would think (if cost is an issue, it was for me). I know everybody wants there sled to stand up tall and proud and look cool but the fact of the matter is that it wont float in deep stuff as well if the suspension is that stiff. That's why I say get adjustable and you can have it stiff in crappy snow conditions and soft when you need it to float in the powder. Guess it depends on what you are looking for though.
Actually.... Mark Holz, in an interview with SledHeads magazine last year said that he designed the Alpha-X for superior handling.... not to accomodate the High Hp riders that like to point it straight up the hill.
I spoke with Mark on the phone in spring 2009 and he said that Alpha would be better than the previous model Holz suspension that needed an additional transfer shock to keep the front end down, but High HP climbers is not what he designed the skid for.... although Erin Beukelman, A Holz/Struthers sponsored rider has been doing well on the RMSHA circuit with a cranked up version of the Alpha in naturally aspirated sleds.
F-Bomb has an Alpha X on his mod 800 IQ-RMK and swears by it.
Winter on the Forums here swears by the many EZ-Ryde skids that he has been installing in his beautiful IQR conversions.. and the late Rick Ward was very successful with the EZ in his RMSHA events
One of my good friends runs his Alpha X on a T-D8 and likes it.
Many of the Thunderstruck riders on super high HP turbo sleds are running the T-sled skid with great results and have been running them for a couple of years now. Rob Hoff, a very aggressive freerider has the T-sled in his sled.
The EZ-ride and Alpha X are about 5 lbs heavier than the Timbersled.
