2008 600 RMK crankcase issues

Anyone aware of a recall or issues with the crankcase leaking fluid on this model? I picked up a WY rental sled at Hay-Days this year and after I changed the crankcase oil, I noticed that there was a small pool of crankcase oil on the trailer deck after going from Chicago to Laramie,WY for out trip out west. Is there such as thing as a "cold leak" or "hot leak"? I am thinking possibly it was cross-threaded at some time in the past or there is a small bur that is allowing the fluid to leak (cuz it is dripping from the plug). Yes, the plug is in tight :face-icon-small-hap

I was going to try a little teflon tape on the plug. Any suggestions or information would be greatly appreciated!!

Thank you....Dan

Are you talking about the chaincase by chance?

If so, 08's and earlier have been problematic leakers from the plastic chaincase cover. The attempted repair in 06 by Polaris to install the metal reinforcement plate on the bottom of the cover helped somewhat. Polaris finally updated the chaincase cover and o'ring (rubber seal) in 09 to a magnesium cover with a better o'ring seal.

The aftermarket has come out with billet covers which is an even better option. Avid Products makes one and member POLZINHUNTER on the forums here makes a really nice cover.

If you're having problems with the drain plug leaking/stripped out which is another common problem, you can get a 1/2" oversize 2 self tapping drain plug at Napa that works well. There are 2 plugs available at Napa that will work. I have used both. the original thread size is a 9/16" which is very rare as far as drain plug sizes go.

1) Napa Part # 704-1011 is a 1/2" 2 oversize self tapping plug.

2) 14mm by 1.5 1 size over. Part number for the self tapping drain plug from NAPA is 704-1362 and lists for $3.67

yes...the chain case

Dave,
Thank you for the suggestions...being the plug is the lowest point where the chain case oil can travel, I am assuming it is the plug, not a leak somewhere else(not like I can see where it is coming from). SO.....if I buy another cover AND replace the drain plug with a new, slightly larger self-tapper, I should get this issue covered....again, thank you for the feedback.....Dan

chaincase???

hi if it is your chaincase,go too your auto parts store and get ,
new 0 rings 4 or 5 and change them out at every oil change.
polaris will try to sell you the plug and o ring not good,
hope this helps.

o-rings

slowdog,

Sounds like step one would be to get some o-rings and use them when replacing the drain plug? If it is still leaking, then it may be the cover. I will give the o-ring a shot! Thanks for the feedback....Dan

hey there sledaddict i also have a 07 600 155 great sled and as diamonddave said i also had the chaincase leak. Plastic case right beside one smokin hot pipe??? Good idea i think NOT!! I replaced mine with the magnesium cover and made a gasket with rtv sealant. Not a drop since. The only reason for the rtv is the cases (on the 07 at least) and the new cover use a completely different seal which were not compatible.
