2007 Summit 800r question

I'm looking at buying a friend's 07 Summit 800r. It's out of warranty, and has the original motor with 3000 km (1800 miles). I know about the crank problems, but I'm wondering if there are many people out there that have had their 800r motors go 3 to 4 thousand Km or more without blowing their cranks. Or am I guaranteed some big bills soon if I buy this sled?
Thanks a ton

Yeah, that's a stressful sound. Especially when you're a pricey heli-lift away from the truck. I suppose all sleds tic tock to some degree.

I just bought a 800r this summer and was able to take it out in october when we got that big storm here in montana. My sled has 3000 miles on it when i bought it, the crank is fine but i had to get a new top end put on and the clutch rebuilt. Luckily I had 20 days left on the warranty so i was able to get all that stuff fixed for free

mine let loose at 4812km (2934 miles). mag side crank seat went out and right side went lean, melted piston and conn. rod let loose sawing the cases and cyl. in half. got a complete long block under warrentee.

believe it or no the thing actually started up first pull and drove up the sled deck on one cyl.

its far cheaper to go though it now than later, garentee you'll need rings anyway, oh yeah first sign is after letting off the throttle it'll die as if you hit the kill switch, let you know you got about half day until it ends up like the above photos.

as far as I know it was just the very first round of 800r that had the tight case problem (r stamp yada yada) bolt in the chaicase grenades too so maybe check/replace it. lock y pipe bolts, watch carb boots, di electric ecm.

There, thats my best warning sticker!:beer;

oh yeah i had my lower chaincase bolt poke out, mine was # 14 made, guess it was early monday morning.

also around 3200km the base gasket went and it started eating a bit of coolant for one ride.

other than those minor details its an awesome sled.
