2007 800 Summit - engine issues - advise on replacement parts?

Guys, i think I just blew a gasket...

revving it up doing a uphill G-out and then it started smoking. it smeeled like coolant so I turned it off and we towed it out...there's a first for me.

Anyhow, I have a feeling it could be a head gasket, but who knows until I get in there. However, it now has about 1500 miles so I figure I might as well change the pistons/rings and depending on what i fins maybe even replate the damn cylinders. However, being ignorant about doo's, what type/brand of pistons do you recommend? Do I get a particular brand? Single or dual ring? Any good deals/vendor out there?

I know '07 Summits 800 had the crank shaft issue, is there an easy way to check this out?

Any other things I should look into or change now that I am taking it apart?

Thanks again for the help.

Zoommer.

OK, took it apart today and found some nasties. It appears that the PTO side piston seized at some point and is fully marred and likely dropped some shavings and scratched the cylinder wall as well as one of the lobes in the crankshaft. The whole PTO side was full of coolant and the MAG side was dry as can be (looked good). The crankshaft lobes had some metal marring and that worries me. I have a feeling that I will have to take out the whole block and inspect it for internal cracks.

So, a week or so I was at Rabbit Ears and the motor bogged down and stopped. I tried to turn on the motor and it was seized. After 3 to 5 minutes the motor turned again and ran like a champ. I have a feeling that was the beginning of the problem; fast learning curve! So my concern is that the lower end of the motor could be cracked or I have one of the bad crankshafts; unless it really was a head gasket. however, the scratched crankshaft could be a bad bearing or the dreaded '07 motor issue...

I remember reading someone did work on the engine block and was able to blueprint/rework the block so that it insured it was balanced and the crankshaft seizure did not happen again. Anyone knows who that is? Any recommendations?

As it stands, I will at least need to rework and surface finish the cylinder (797 twin) with Nicosil and get a new set of pistons. Any suggestions who to go with? As for checking for cracks or damage in the internal case walls, is there a good method? I think I need to crack the case open at any rate because of the radiator fluid in the crankcase drying out the main bearings...

Maybe I should just buy a rebuilt engine...

This is not just a head gasket.I would be checking that center crank bearing fer sure...

I'd pack her up in a cooler and ship her to BJ at Sled Heads Racing. He has reasonable prices and he's honest about what she'll need; highly recommended. He even has a mod for the case to make sure the bearing races are in tolerance. Get his porting and dual ring pistons while you're at it; you'll be very very happy! Tell him I sent ya.

Have FUN!
