2006 Chevy Crew LT Duramax

All I can say is we went to the Rockies over Labor Day weekend with a 2006 crew pulling a 9000-10000lb camper and that thing really pulls nice. About 10.5mpg average easily running 70-75.

Mtn grades - slowed us down a little but not much more than the average car. We didn't hold up traffic.

Braking - phonomenal. It had a chip that varied the turbo vane angle and starting at the beginning of a 10 percent downhill, going slow at first, the rig was able to slow down even more by using just the shifter, no brakes.

It had 265 tires and 3.73 gears.

Now, my 6.0 gas 2002 crew has done the same trip and I felt it was pushing it to try and exceed 65 and the mtns were slow going, up and down. Average 7mpg, 265 tires and 4.10 gears.
 
I have one. Looked for an 06 or 07 Classic for 4 months before I found one that I wanted. GMC loaded with only 31k miles. These are the last of the non DPF trucks that GM made. I have a programmer and exhaust and I love it. I usually see 13 mpg or better towing. I see as good as 23 mpg on the highway if I keep it at or below 75 mph (but I never do!).

buy it, you will love it. I have 4 d-max's, three for work one personal. The 02 to 06's I like a lot better than the new 11. The 11 doesn't seem to have the power that the older ones have, but haven't pulled much yet, I think the exaust brake on the 11 might be nice to have. The older trucks get a lot better mileage than the 11. The only major repair any of them have had is one set of injectors, under warranty, and we pull the snot out of them. The older trucks are all over 100k and one is at 200k still running good.
 
The 06 is a good year for the Duramax. They got the injector problem worked out, and you really won't find many complaints. You'll love the Allison transmission for breaking when coming down a hill. Also, I think that's the 1st year they went to the 6 speed transmission. I could be wrong on that one though.
If you can find one for a decent deal, then I'd say jump on it. For some reason, trucks are bringing all the money right now. It's hard to find a good deal, especially on a diesel. They seem to hold there value allot better than the gassers also.
 
Trucks are really high right now and so is the milage on many. Seems to not be as big of a problem on the diesel as long as the truck was taken care of. I think the biggest reason for high used car value right now is supply and demand. They stopped doing many leases 2 years ago with the cash for clunkers program. There are just not as many used ones out there.

That's the first time I've heard anyone say that the '11 didn't feel like the strongest Dmax ever. That is a ripping truck!

I've had good luck with mine. Make sure you get an 06/07(Classic). If you get an 06, make sure it is an LBZ. Some still had left over LLY motors. The LBZ will have the 6 speed tranny. That is a must!
 
the 06 is a great truck. as posted it is the first year of the 6 speed. I have a 05 lly I bought brand new and wish I had a 6 speed. Still love my 05. I looked at getting a new 11 dmax and holly **** they are expenxive. I will be keeping my 05. just turned over 102,000 with no real problems. both front wheel bearings around 75,000 and a rear axle seal at 85,000.
I believe all 06's have the six speed. I believe the early 06's still have the lly motor and the 06.5's have the lbz.

if you find a clean used duramax try to see if it has ever had a programmer(chip) on it before and what kind. I wouldn't be worried about buying a 04-06 dmax with anywhere from 100,000 to 150,000 miles as long as it had regular service records and no tuner or a mild tuner.
 
the 2011 is supposed to be a strong truck stock.
I have a 05 lly with a full 4" exhaust including the down pipe, and preditor programer on it since almost new. Mostly on 65hp setting and some times on 85hp setting. I have had it to the drag strip twice. on the 65hp setting it runs 14.9's in the 1/4 mile. This is the same tune it has had on it since almost new. Still on stock trany without any problems. 14.3's on the highest setting. I have only put it on the highest setting a couple times.
A new stock 2011 was listed as a 16.9 1/4 in one of the magazine tests. Still faster then a 2011 ford or dodge.
The 2011 is nice. Just saying a used $200 progarmer can make the older dmax's just as fast or faster then a new 2011.

The 11 may have more power but it is a bigger feeling truck which may make it feel a little lack. We'll have to line them up and see what happens:face-icon-small-win. I know it won't hold a candle to my 04, but it is chipped.:face-icon-small-coo
 
To me its probably the 2006 maybe a 2005 if the right deal comes a long. I am looking for one an older guy owned to pull his camper and took really good care of. Its all about paying cash for one so the 2011 is out.
 
It is an awesome truck. I just got one in april, and I love it. Mine was an LLY, but the 06 lly and lbz are mechanically identical, and both have the 6 speed allison. The LBZ just comes with a hotter tune (360hp vs 310 in the LLY). The 04 and 05 LLY is mechanically a different engine than the 06. I put some gauges on mine and had some EFI Live tuning done to it by Rob Coddens of adrenaline truck performance in eagle, ID, and now my truck will destroy my buddy's 2010 dmax w/banks 6 gun. Anyway, what I was trying to get at there is that if you do get an 06, IF you are planning on having any tuning done to it, it doesn't make a difference whether it's LBZ or LLY. You won't be let down.

No, I was told by multiple diesel performance shops that theyb are mechanically identical. The first generation of LLY had the other mouthpiece and injector, as I understand.
 
big deal about the mouth piece. I put a lbz mouthpiece on my lly for around $70 and a couple hours labor.
 
New style, I think I will go to a 1500 with the max package and the 6.2 gas. All I pull is a 4 place open trailer,I hope I can pick up some gsa mileage. It would make you a nice truck.
