2005 RMK 900 rebuild

I'm going to be trading my 1999 Arctic Cat Jag 340 for a 2005 RMK 900 151 this week. Its got a blown motor and i was wondering what i can do when i rebuild the whole engine to make it reliable. I've read a lot on what to do to the sled over all to make it a good sled but havent seen anything specifically about the motor.

It's a nice sled and if nothing else i"ll just part it out

For the motor starting from the bottom up:

-32mm large taper crank kit with new clutch
-06 pistons
-new throttle body boots to ensure no air leaks
-motion pro throttle/oil cable
-06 motor mounts
-new torque stop
-new fuel filter (annually)
-new clutch bolt torqued to 96 ft-lbs
-inspect all wiring closely and carefully for signs of wear, protect from any sharp edges that could cause shorts
-new thermostat (every 2 years)
-verify oil ratio at about 35:1 +/- (check multiple times)
-add 100:1 oil in the first tank to protect from airlock in oil system during first ride
-verify cases, cylinders,and head are in usable condition, if suspect, replace with new (depends on severity of failure)

I'm sure there's more, that's just all I can think of right now.

Ya, the 09 front is good, slimmer profile, and you can lift with that bumper when needed.
 
Skinz front bumper. Got it on amazon for like 170 shipped. Way cheaper than front end.

For the motor I highly recommend IndyDan. Good luck
 
its already got the front end. i just wanted to know if that would be good enough. the motor is already apart so would that be a problem if i sent it somewhere? Im going to look at the sled tomorrow so i'll let you know how bad the motor is
 
x2 on Indy Dan for the bottom end Torque Master, he did mine and you need to read his thread on the 05 06 900 motors,right from Polaris there were issues. I sent it to Dan and there were no more issues. reliable,no vibration,torque and felt confident while deep in the mountains. He is highly recomended by me and so many others.
 
Going from a 340 to a 9

Depending on how and where you ride, I would consider a 159 Track.

A built 900 makes considerable power.

The funny thing about this statement and the bad reputation the 900 motor has is that it is more reliable than the new 800. I still have stock 05 crank in mine and I know of quite a few 4000 plus mile 900 motors.

If you have Dan build your lower end for you he will give you a 3 year warranty on it.
 
engin not starting after rebuild

I just rebuilt my 900 with new crank bearings and seals cause the seals started to leak and pull air in. while in there I replaced the rods and top end. after putting it all back together I fired it up with the exhaust off and it started after a few pulls but my buddy killed it immediatly after it started. we put the exhaust back on and started it. it ran for about 3 secs and stalled. I have not been able to start it again. any suggestions??
 
Ok so i got the sled. I figured if nothing else I could part it out for more than my Jag was worth. The motor is ****. Blown piston, damaged head, and two holes is the case. The crank and rods are still in one piece but I'm not sure if they're any good.

If i rebuild it I pretty much have to buy all new parts for the motor and i want to know if it would be cheaper to just buy a used motor on ebay and have that rebuilt with a new top and bottom end. Or is it even worth it to put that much money in to it?
 
I would keep an eye on eBay for a used motor. Throw a grand into a motor and a little more in incidental replacement parts and you will have a really fun sled. Especially compared to what you traded for the rmk 900.
 
I think I'm just gonna buy a used motor, tear it down and measure everything, then replace anything it might need. Plus I'm not the one who tore the motor down so it might be difficult to reassemble it since I'm not familiar with these motors
