2005 rmk 800 questions

I just thought I would see if anyone else has had these issues before i dig into the sled.

Ok to start I have as the title says an 05 rmk 800 with SLP pipe, airhorn, flow rites, and high flow intake vents. I changed jets and needles to SLP's settings

I have a few issues, first the fuel shutoff is in a redicuouls spot to reach, has anyone ever moved these?

Second, the sled seemed to smoke alot, i thought it was just from oil in the pipe, due to idling it in the summer. So when got it out, it seemed to clean up some, but at wide open throttle it still left a cloud of smoke behind me.

the last thing is it feels weak in the mid range, is the normal for this motor, or is it more likly my clutching and gearing?

If anyone has run into stuff like this on this sled, let me know what worked for you. This is my first year with this sled, so i'm still learning it's temperment.

Slps jet chart was way off on those things. I don't want to qutoe the numbers off the top of my head cuz its been too long since I ran them. You will find its happy running about 5 sizes smaller on your main jets than what the slp chart shows.
As for the doggy mid range. That is most likely from just running way too much fuel. The mid range is where that setup really rocks! Make sure to read your plugs and keep leaning it out and it should come alive for you.

ok, I thought the PTO side looked a bit rich when looking at the plugs, but the magside almost looked lean when I first checked. I will def keep tuning and checking, thanks for the input!

Yeah i dont run anything close to what slp says either they are always way too rich you just gotta keep checking plugs and reading the piston wash to see how its running.

Ok, first off, make sure you figure out the oil issue. The oil pumps can go bad and when they do they almost always run full rich. So how much oil did you use compared to gas in your ride? If you are running full rich on oil that will affect the performance of the motor through the midrange too.

And no, the 800 with SLP single is a snappy, strong pulling motor through the whole RPM range. If the oil is ok, then I'd be looking at clutching and carb tuning. Gearing will be fine.

You can move the fuel shutoff to anywhere in the line you want to put it.

If my memory serves me right........

470 jets
3 turns out on fuel screws
1 3/4 turns out on the air screws ( this is what cures the bog, it is best to sneak up on this setting. start at 1.25 turns out, if it bogs due to cold pipe when riding around normal and it hesitates and or bogs turn the air screws out 1/8th ata a time until it snaps when you hit it. you don't want to go to far on this setting and end up with a lean spot..... Just enough to keep the pipe warm.)
stock needles @ position 3
21/41 gears for 2" 23/40 for 1.25 tracks
stock team with 10-68 and an almond blue primary spring

stock motor, shelf removed from airbox with slp kit vf2 reeds yellow (very light high altitude) ves springs

Note, you will have to grind the backside of chain tensioner for the 23/40 gears, but it takes the dogleg out of the chain

ok i think i found my oil problem. The arm on the oil pump looks bend, whenI looked closer and compared to some pars diagrams, it looks like there is supposed to be a bolt on the outside of the arm. Well there is no bolt on mine. I tried to see if I could push the arm in tighter to the pump but itwouldn't move.

Do you guys know if this is fixable, or is it more likley that the shaft the arm is on bent and I just need to swap out pumps? The set lines line up, but I'm thinking if it is bent, it's not operating correctly. I'm hesitent on riding again until this is fixed, incase it goes from over oiling to no oil.

thoughts? I am going to try to get it fixed this week.

How much oil should this machines use, I have a 02 800 that uses a 1/4 of the oil tank or more to a tank of gas, also when I bought the machine the oil pump cable was cut, not broke but cut, i think the previous owner did this because it was using to much oil, but then I was told that by cutting the cable that would throw the pump into full rich mode as a fail safe if the cable did break, is there a way to adjust the pump with the cable besides what the manual says to lean out the pump. Thanks sorry to hi jack this thread

See these pictures. This is my 04' everything is original stock so this is what your oil setup should look like.

I don't know what the "correct oil volume" is for these sleds but it has to fall between 32:1 and 50:1 ratio. I would think 32:1 would be closer to what they should run. So that means if you use 10 gallons of gas you should use
(10gX128oz/g)=1280oz
1280oz/32=40oz

40oz=5 cups or 1.25 qts of oil per 10 gallons of gas. This is probably a bit heavy on the oil use but still I would say a qt. per 10 gallons is fully acceptable if not a bit shy.

Hope that helps.

That does help! it confirms my suspicions that there is a nut missing. the arm on mine is kinda twisted out and the nut is not on there. I am going to try to pick up replacement parts on friday.
