2005 polaris rmk 900 weird noise (video inside)

2005 polaris rmk 900 weird noise (video inside)

I just bought this unit, it has 1300 miles.

I took it out to revelstoke for a quick burn and a noise has become apparent...

Its a really quick video as my camera died.

.................................................. .................................

Also my operating temp seems to be 170-185 with scratchers down. The last owner put some weird scratchers on it, its like a cable with a hook, ill take a picture tommarow.

If you are talking about the squeak at the end of the vid when the motor went back to idle that is the belt squeaking.
Try adjusting the belt defelection with the adjustment on the secondary clutch until the belt has about 1.5 inches up and down movement.

X3 - Belt deflection is too tight. Use your 90* wrench to loosen the sheaves on the secondary clutch, Loosen the jamb nut on the stop screw and crank it in just a little bit, then retighten the jamb nut, remove the 90 wrench and give it a test ride... once the squeaking goes away you are good... Spec is listed above in Rob's post.... about 1.5"

:beer;

Definitely get a set of standard scratchers on that thing... the 900s require them, lol

I just watched this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBw8N-CLDeE

WHat does belt deflection mean?

Also i dont have my tool kit (never came with machine) cant i use allen key?

Basically belt deflection is the amount that the belt moves when you place your finger on it and push it down midway between the 2 clutches.

You'll want to pick up a 90* wrench from your local dealer (a few $) to have so you can change belts... it threads in and opens the clutch faces.... then you can adjust your jamb nut with an allen wrench as well.... DO NOT force these 2 items or you'll be in a pretty bad position if something breaks.

You can place a straight object on top of the belt from the 2 clutches if you want to actually measure it.

This isn't a very good picture, but you get the idea.......

You're deflection does look a little too tight to me.

When you look on the side of the secondary clutch you will see a threaded hole, that is where your 90 wrench will thread in..... other than that, just follow the steps I posted above to adjust it and you'll be good to go.:beer;

I thought that was enough slack. So i just wanted to confirm with that video..

I will head to polairs tommarow, inless i can find the part on ebay or something...

Also where is the tool kit located on these machines?

The tool kit is strapped underneath the seat

Part No. 2875911 TOOL-BELT REMOVAL $5.80

The manual says 1.5", which is correct. But I set mine a bit tighter....

I adjust until the sled want to move forward on the concrete floor, then back it off just a bit. Or until the squeak stops.

You'll get a little bit quicker engagement.

Okay so i have got the "L tool" and threaded it in and the belt is loose, probably to lose. How do i tighten the belt back up? If i thread the L" tool back out then it just comes out..

While the belt is loose, get an 1/8" allen wrench that will fit into the bolt right next to the L-wrench and get a box end wrench (open end wrench or crescent wrench will work) and loosen the 7/16" jamb nut on the adjuster bolt and turn the bolt in (clockwise) and re-tighten the jamb nut. Doing this will limit how much the clutch closes when you remove your L-wrench. Remember that a little bit of adjustment goes a long way.

The "L" tool that you got is just for belt removal. As you tighten it it loosens the sheaves and spreads them apart allowing you to remove the belt easily. To adjust your belt deflection you loosen the the 7/16" jam nut on the belt width adjuster located at about the 10 o'clock position near the center splines in the picture below. Then using an 1/8" Allen wrench, adjust the threaded screw as needed. Note: Turn the set screw in (clockwise) to make the belt looser, and turn it out (counterclockwise) to make the belt tighter. Finally tighten the jam nut. Thats how you set you belt deflection and get rid of your squeal. Hope this helped.

Sorry for posting the same info as 94fordguy but we must have been doing it at the same time. haha

When removing your L-tool you will need to make a turn, then feed the belt back up so the clutch doesn't pinch it as it did in your video... keep repeating the motion till the belt is back at the top of the secondary and your wrench has been removed... otherwise it will lock the belt as yours did.

When you mean pinch it do you mean the belt is too far inside the clutch? Like it needs to be ridding flush not within it??? Hope that makes sence. Cause im turning my allen key and its just about all the way out and nothing is tightening..So maybe the belt is in the way...
