2003 Xc Reverse problems

So I am having some problems with my reverse engaging. Sometimes it work but other it doesn't. When i first took the cover off to make sure it wasn't issues with the gears and put it back on it engaged every time. The next day i went out there to show my friend, it wouldn't work.

When I pull the lever and push the throttle a little bit it jumps forward and then locks up. I can push the lever forward and going forward works just fine.

I've noticed that the lever is getting loose and floppy but it doesn't look like the linkage is getting loose but i could be mistaken.

Has anyone ever had this problem? Was it something simple to fix or did you have to replace something?

Thanks.

It sounds like the linkage is not pulling the reverse lever on the chain case far enough to fully engage reverse.
Adjust the heim joints so when you pull out on the lever the shift lever coming out of the chaincase turns farther

I checked/tightened the linkage and it didn't work so i just disconnected it and turned it by hand. It still did not engage, I really don't want to take it apart again because its hard to work on it because you can't take off a side panel. Also, when i looked in there last time there was nothing wrong with it. What would i be looking for that might be a problem?

Thanks

If the linkage is adjusted correctly it could be the pins on shift fork are worn out, have flat spots on them. These pins are replaceable. If they are worn down too far the fork can not pull reverse gear out far enough. Worn pins and or linkage out of adjustment can cause both forward and reverse to be engaged at the same time.

Dowel pin part number #7661826

This weekend I will have to get back in there and look more at that part of it. Could those pins be worn down that much that it makes that big of a difference? I guess I will find out.

Thanks
