2003.5 mountain kat 900 159"

Hi Everyone,

Looking at picking up an 03" mountain Kat 900 159" and I have a couple of questions, and concerns, I hope all of you can help me out.
The asking price is $2800 the machine has less than 500 miles on it and appears to be in almost new condition, is this a fair price?
After doing extensive research on this particular model it appears they have to much hp and end up eating themselves is this a design problem or rider error?
Last, what upgrades would you recommend? Unfortunately I only get out 4 to 5 weekends a season, we ride hard but probably nothing extreme as most of you. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

have 2 of them and motors r one of the most reliable ones out there do a wild child steering post and check the drive bearings on a regular basis and ride the **** out of it oh and the price is a good deal

Buy It

I had a 2003 9001M for years, tons of mods, great motor, rear suspension harsh, handwarmers suck, replace the drive chain every couple of years or if you ride alot every year, things I recommend SLP Single Pipe Setup with airbox Mod, Boss Seat (stock to low and breaks down) foward mounted steering post and ride the heck out of it, very important though, when riding midrange vary the gas, donnot run steady RPM or you will burn it down, MADDOGWFO, great price if it has that low of miles

low mileage. nice but hope has not sit for years without engine run, or if not, fogged.
price OK in my opinion but could find that sled/04's for that. with more mileage but probably also have some of the mods you will want anyway - handlebar riser / higher seat / can / etc. some of the prices seen on snowest people will come down on from there so consider that when you look at other similar sleds on the sight when comparing.

Have owned '06 M7 in 153 and 162. Have spent considerable time on 07 rev and 08 xp skidoos. My favorite ride--03 900 carbed-162 powerclaw, wildchild steering post-highrise seat-slp air box with additional florites- get it jetted right with clean air and it won't bog with snow up over the windshield. Screen those air intakes by the footrest for sure. That price is right for sure especially, if its efi.

Buy that

I just picked up an 04 900 mc EFI and it was the best decision I have made in a while. Never buying Polaris again. This thing rips. Climbed to the foot of Baker the other day 2 uping. Skis off the ground and it just keeps pulling. 1900 miles got it for $2500. Seems like a good deal that you have

Ya if thats real mileage, buy it. I've been on 04 King since 05. Very reliable, very fun.

For peace of mind... I would have a compression test done on it, have the crank checked and check the wear on the clutches (ESPECIALLY because its a 9 tower! look for cracks) Good idea to know what your maintenence cost might come to AFTER you drop $2500.00. Its a good deal though... im just saying "for peace of mind." If you do buy it, pull the belly pan this summer and check the entire front bulkhead for cracks and have them welded as needed.

I had the same sled. The all black with orange and kinda yellow stickers looked sweet. I put almost 5000 miles on mine with a single pipe and it worked awesome!! Buy it for sure.

Great Sled

Powder Crew has a good point. I would definitely check compression, check crank and look at the bulkhead. I have an 03 900 1M and just picked up a six tower clutch for it since the 9 Tower was wore out. My sled has always ran awesome. Pulling the chain case apart and checking everything/changing oil is a good idea, I try to do it twice a year but I work mine like a borrowed mule. Awesome sled and there are tons of mods for these sleds posted all over this forum, i think you can find a thread on about everything on Snowest.

FYI: if the rollers are sloppy on your 9tower primary, you should just plan on replacing the clutch. Odds are SLIM that it can be rebuilt. The 6tower upgrade is the way to go, but plan on spending $250.00 minimum. You'll be between $500.00-$600.00 for a NEW set-up primary. You'll want to flip it on its side and take a look at the drive axle bearings as well. An '03 is getting up there in years.

If it really has that low of miles the 9 tower should be good for another yr. or so. Just make sure he didn't install the speedo a yr. or so ago. Open the stock reeds to the 04 and later yrs. to 11+ mm. Put a snorkel intake that you can make and hang on!! Dump some weight like alum. ski bushings etc... and it will respond like a King Cat and then some! Remember the '03 had the hottest timing and will make good power at higher elevations. Do not run it at sea level to 2000', you will burn it down! Basically 3000' and above before you even get on it.
