I have never had an issue just using a ratchet and going by feel. They're small bolts going into aluminum, they will strip if you're not careful.
Also, make sure you're not on the bottom end of your torque wrench's range (for any application). I tried using my Matco 1/2" drive torque wrench for head bolts, 18 ft. lbs. and it pulled the thread out of the cylinder because I was not using the correct torque wrench. 18 ft lbs was on the bottom end of that big wrench's range, and so I probably took it to more like 25 ft lbs. (heli coil!) Amatuer hour on that one. Anyway, picked up a cheap 3/8 drive torque wrench that puts 18 ft. lbs. more in the middle of the tool's range and haven't pulled anymore threads. My 1/2" drive is for the truck chassis, 3/8" and 1/4" drive for the sleds.
