2001 Mountain Cat 800 engine Many ???'s

I just purchased a 2001 Mountain Cat 800 144" Carb model. The oil pump bolts vibrated out and the pump fell off. The internal drive piece that powers the pump is siezed and the flange for it is broken off. I am in the process of buying a Flywheel puller to get the whole bottom end apart and the crank out. Can I get this piece out when the bottom cases are split? The crank shows no signs or discoloration and has no detectable play. I want to go with it and do a top-end rebuild along with the rest of the sled. How tough is the 800 motor? It seems pretty burly since it held up and looks fine compared to the nuked top end.

oil delete

Thanks for the info ZIP. I am thinking about converting to Pre-Mix and eliminating the oil injection. BDX makes a plug for 2005 and newer engines, but it looks like it would fit. I would like to not have oiling problems again.

you cant just block it off there is some other things you need to do to make it a premix motor I cant recall off hand what it was though.I have an extra oil pump and all the peices to make it work.Ant way if you decide to go pre mix do some research on it first.

Please correct me if I'm wrong but I think the 01 800 is the smaller crank with the small PTO. Think the 02 and newer 800 is the same as the 900.

800 motor

Zip- I have searched for info on the oil delete and even found a thread with pictures and all. I am wonder what kind of damage I am going to see when I split the cases. The internals for the oil pump are seized. You say you have the parts? I will be in touch. Thanks!

Ultra- The 2001 does have the smaller pto bearing. Besides that, the rest of the crank (rods and bearings) is bomber from what I have heard. Looks way stronger than my 600 Liberty Big Block sitting next to it.

Thanks for all the great info guys!!!

Vinpie, you are correct that the rest of the crank practically bulletproof. The only difference between the '-01 and later cranks is the PTO end. The rest of the crank is the same. There also weren't really that many problems with the smaller end, we've seen many of them run for a long time with no problems.

"Please correct me if I'm wrong but I think the 01 800 is the smaller crank with the small PTO. Think the 02 and newer 800 is the same as the 900. "

Ultra is correct. However the only difference is the end of the PTO shaft where the clutch mounts. All the bearings, rods and other parts are the same. To delete the oil pump you can either get a block off plate with a grease zerk that you have to remember to grease occasionally or drill a hole from the center section of the upper crankcase into one side so oil can get in and lubricate the seal and bushings on the water and oil pump drive shaft.

block off

IDCATMAN1- If I do the block off plate with zerk, do I remove the piece that is broken off inside my case? I am guessing it supports the oil pump/water pump shaft. I am worried that the gears are stripped or badly damaged. Waiting to see...
