2 belts chewed up in one day

I went riding the 36" of fluffy powder in Utah last week and I ended up burning 2 belts in one day:mad:. Anybody know what the problem could be? I realize that belts fail and that the 07's are kinda notorious for eating belts, but 2 in one day seems pretty anomalous. My buddy was riding his 06 REV and he didn't have any problems. Could the lack of air/venting from the extreme powder be a suspect? Or could it be from too much snow getting through the vents and getting the clutch just barely wet enough to make the belt slip until it heats up and breaks?

If your vents let snow/water into the clutches.....that will kill a belt FAST.
How is alignment? Are you running the correct RPM...83-8400rpm?
What belt are you running?
What is the condition of the clutches and belts?....clean....not excessively worn, bushing, rollers etc....
Track tension not too tight?

My RPM's are running around 7800 on a wide open throttle through 6" of powder. I think everything else is fine as I have been riding 5 times before and not had a belt problem. I'm assuming the deep powder was choking my sled and probably getting too much water/snow into the clutch. The guy I bought this from has modded the air filter by just taking the filter out and covering the hole with a mesh screen. He also has ported about 50 holes the size of a pencil into the side panel where my left knee is when I'm sitting on the sled. I'm almost positive this contributed to the burned belts by letting too much of the snow in. It was piling up over my windshield all day.

not good

YOU have more problems clean the clutch up take weight out of the primary YOU should be pulling 8300 period The r moter does not like less You are building way to much heat from to low rpm But hey i dont no a lot but try cleaning it and see what happens

Will do, I'll take a look at it. Anything I should be looking at to make sure its "clean"? What do you mean by CLEAN it???

You dont need to remove weight to change your RPMs if you have enough clicker adjustment, just set the clickers up a number. Does your sled eat belts on non powder days?

If the sled is new to you then some well spent dollars could go to bringing your ride to a good clutching guy and having them at least check the alignment of your clutches. Probably a good idea to have them pop them and clean them and figure out what you have in there as a starting point as far as springs/ramps/helix and pin weight goes. I'm kind of a newb at this myself but as I understand it the flyweight (pin weight) helps determine engine RPM (need more RPM reduce pin weight mass) and the clicker setting helps determine response of the system but not maximum RPM. This is overly simplistic and feel free to correct this if I'm wrong here but I'm pretty sure it works like that.

You can also pull your clutches yourself and clean them with brake parts cleaner or whatever works for you, take pictures as you disassemble things and write down what parts you find in there, read allot about clutching and so forth, depends on how much you like to twist tools.

There are other information sources out there too but you can search for Dynamo Joe as his website has some good videos on clutch removal and cleaning/servicing which makes it seem less daunting.

Best of luck. :beer;

No I haven't had any belt problems on non powder days.

1) What clicker are you running? 7,800 is too low
2) Any vents on the side panel must be covered with a pre-filter
3) Checkout a SLP Hot Air Elimination Kit and their High Flow Intake kit. I have been using these kits for 5 years and have relatively cool under the hood temps
4) D^Js clutch kit will really liven up that sled and my clutches run slightly warm to the touch. He hangs out on DOOTALK.com or go to mxzx-revzone.com

check ur cluth alignment if they arent aligned with each other is what will blow a new belt faster than u can put them on.

Any tips on how to check clutch alignment? I've got my primary clutch off and taken a part so I can give it a thorough cleaning. Any problems with using chemicals (lacquer thinner or brake cleaner) and a scotch brite pad to clean with? Thanks for helping me out everybody.

I would suggest only using brake clean. If you use a scotchbrite pad make sure your not rubbing to hard to polish it up. Light and easy..

Take it to a dealer and have it checked for alignment. its only like 30 bucks worth the wages and worth it. and i asked him about the snow and he said if the snow were to be contributing, you would feel it slip. and thirdly check that tourque stopper that i showed you in my thread. problem must be in there. and check to see if your clutch cover assembly is bent. mine was from jumping and what not and it was rubbing on the clutch by the secondary.

My Wifes 600 blew a couple belts last year and the problem was loose, missing bolts on the Y pipe, dumpimg exhaust heat right onto the clutch cover. Also check the bolt on the priimary they can come loose.

Probably worn out rollers that has worn out the ramps...garbage in the TRA!

cover those holes with some SLP prefilter
