1978 Ford flooding out

Ok so I have a 1978 Ford F150 I'm going to restore it this summer but I use it for hunting right now. The problem I'm having is I can jump in pump the gas three times turn the key and it starts up right away. But after it runs and I drive it for ahwile if I shut it off It floods itself out when I try starting it again. Usually If i hold the gas in all the way it will start but I can watch my gas gage go down when I do that, and sometimes it will not start unless it sets for an hour. So what I'm thinking is that the carb is getting stuck open or somthing on that line....Any idea?

Yep, pick up module in the distributor. I had a 79 ford 250 that gave me fits. Would start and run great when cold. Run run fine warm. Shut it off and could not get it to start agin til it would cool off sompletely. Then it would start right up as soon as I would touch the key....Was very frustrating to figure that one out. Good luck with yours.

Well I looked today and it definetly has somthing to do with the carb. I took off the air filter and looked in and everything looks a little gummed up. Will have to pull of the carb and do a good cleaning. Think someone asked what carb it was and it's the Edelbrock.

Well I dug the old ford out of the snow bank thing started right up. Parked inside and did a little work on the carb put some carb cleaner in the gas and took of the air filter and used some carb cleaner and cleaned and lubed everything up. Everything seems to be working good now took it for a spin. I killed it and it started right back up without me having to touch the gas. Seems to have a little better response when i step it down also.

Choke is to tight, it is closing before the engine cools off, than when you go to start it, it floods the engine. Should be able to loosen the 3 screws on the coil, that is the thing that the wire plugs into, and turn it a little until the choke flap opens just a little. If you have to pump it a lot to get it to start when cold, you went to far. Make sure that there is power at that coil with it running.

Yup thanks I was looking at that and the choke was staying closed tight so i used carb cleaner and did some adjustment on that until like you said it's open a little bit it seems to be working better. I'm not so worried about it because it's just going to get used for hunting tell summer then the motor is coming out so I can start restoring it.

Thanks everyone for your help.
