16" Track on a 07 M1000?

I'm a cat rider, pretty devoted at this point. But I'm not brand loyal whatsoever. I'm not afraid to admit the strong and weak points in my machines, none are perfect.

IMO, you can't compare the M-Series to the XP's for flotation in the deep. I've went back and forth from my '07 M1000 153" to the 154" XP's and it's night and day the difference a 16" wide makes for take off and slow speed navigation, or starting uphill all in really deep 2-3ft pow. The M-Series do great, but they trench more off take off and take more skill to get going in the deep without getting stuck.

I also find once your going, the 16" only helps when you slow back down under 15MPH again and have to get back on the gas. Other than that, I think the track speed on the 15" once your moving more than makes up for the less track. The 16's on the XP's just feel and sound slow like the motor is lugging compared to the M1000 with the 15" which is just sawing away. It's amazing what an extra 5-10MPH track speed sounds and feels like.

If I had an ideal choice, it would be to keep the 153" and have it 16" wide. Now I'm forced to try out the 162" for obvious reasons. On the hill I don't notice a benefit in the 16" wide tracks, just in the technical deep snow riding situations do I find it really night and day. Maybe the Powerclaw makes up for this? I'm still running the stock camo and make the best of it, takes me everywhere the other sleds have a hard time getting to, and some places more, so what do I have to complain about that track?

If he has a 16" on an m sled then I want one of the bulkheads he used to make it work. I don't buy it either, think your smokin to much of that wacky tabacky!

Not really an apples to apples comparison IMO.
I ride a 153 m1000, and it has a lot of weight to overcome.
When you consider a much lighter/nimble xp, I don't doubt your findings.
I see similar things as you described, however, when riding a M-8 with a powerclaw it is almost a wash.
I like the shorter tracks, but in certain conditions, a 162 would be a benefit on a 1000... I find myself planning ahead more and riding more agressive in slow, boondocking conditions.
I have ridden plenty of cats, some m-7s, M-8's and smaller cc sleds that float phenominal and don't trench.

The cat riders will tell you they are better than a 16 wide and live by them.. Till cat builds a sled that takes a 16, then they are all going to switch to em. Bandwagon is coming guys, prepare too jump on! You guys are too hard on LHF, hes just keepin us entertained..
Half of your post on SW are praising heavy *** rt's or 16" wide tracks like there the second coming of christ lol. I had a 16 wide on the old mc800 and it was nice but wasn't a night and day differance.

I would stay with the 15 wide. The 16 wides are too heavy for their size if you look at the weights of ea. If you are a sidehilling freak the 15 wide is the ticket. If you are climbing and your machine is a wheelie king then go length wise instead of width. The 15 wide will barely fit the M series, No way without mods will a 16 fit! This is one of the reasons that I think there are clutch problems on the M series, There is no where for the air to escape the tunnel with this narrow width, No wonder there are belt problems on these machines. Just a big squirrel cage fan. I bet those that have drilled the track notice better belt life and higher track speeds? Just a guess.

16" on a Stock M?

It simply will not fit unless the track is trimmed, or you have an aftermarket chassis / bulkhead. I've a VE tunnel on my sled with a DD lite drive - stock bulkhead. The 15" track is tight enough.
Even if it did fit, an M1000 w / a 162" track will go anywhere you want it to if you can ride, and will go places that you don't want to be once you're there.
