156 X3 Installed

Got my center punched 156 X3, avid drivers, and clutching from Carls last week and got it all put on over the weekend. Install went fairly smooth, getting the drive shaft back in was kind of a pain and took a fair amount of time. We stuck the pto side of the shaft in and then had to muscle the exhaust side in, we barely got that side in, and when we did it was only in about an inch and need to keep going about another inch, we couldn't get it muscled over because the center tooth was putting a lot of pressure on the track, it just plain wouldn't move. Eventually we ended up putting the bottom gear on the belt drive and had to thread the bolt into the drive shaft and tighten, which pulled the shaft over, and that went smoothly. I don't have anything torqued yet, and don't have the track tension set, I'm expecting a shop manual later this week. Not sure but its looking like an offset axle and larger wheels may be needed depending on how much the track loosens up, I maxed out the adjustment bolts on the axle and it didn't seem to get overly tight, but I'm not sure what the tension specs are so we will see. Overall the track looks awesome, and I can't wait to get it on the snow. I will get ride reports posted here after I get some time on it. Hope for a thanksgiving trip. Sled has stock rear suspension, and motor is stock besides an HPS can and Carls clutching.

Wow that looks mean/cool.
That thing is going to rip.

Looks great, how did you measure where to press the drivers onto, from the outside of the shaft, or did you have Carls press them?

The drivers came with instructions from Avid, the outer edge of the pto side/non center tooth driver goes on 12.5" from the very end of the mag side of the shaft, and the inner edge of the center toothed driver goes 9.5" in from the end of the shaft. Its kind of tough to measure really accurated since the spline end of the shaft sits about and inch lower than the shaft itself. I just used a tape measure the best I could, made markings and pressed them on. Once on there is an inside distance that is measured that is supposed to be 4 1/8" +/-1/16"
I have a feeling mine aren't exact, after installing I noticed that my center tooth is not exactly centered, probably off about 1/16"-1/8", I wouldn't think it is enough to cause any issues.

I'm in the process of stretching my 155 to a 163, now you got me thinking I went the wrong direction. Looks like its going to be a riot in the deep stuff!

Yeah, you could say that. It took me 3 beers. What a pain in the a$$!

Just like graph paper with 1/4"x 1/4" squares. Just cut the sheet and tape it where ever you want your venting then use a center punch and mark every other intersection so they are 1/2" apart. Pull the sheet and use a bit 3/16" or smaller and start drilling. Easy and free.

What's the total price of this set up? Isn't it close to 1500? You'll have to let us all know what it is like. I would love to do this set up on my sled!

Is that track on backwards or are they supposed to be installed so that the lugs pack the snow instead of that lug taper or lug bend cupping the snow?

I think your looking at the picture wrong, your looking at two lugs that looks like one that is bent backwards. I did the same thing look at it a bit closer.

$1299 for the center punched track, $250 for the drivers. And then I have a little over $500 into clutching between Carls sheave machining, balancing, primary and secondary springs, helix, and belly buster weights. I think you could run stock clutching and be alright, but I just decided to go with what Carls recommended.

Keep in mind, if you don't get the center punched track you can get it for quite a bit less than retail, I think I paid around 900 for mine shipped, but you do need to run an anti stab which runs 100. So about $300 cheaper, and they are available right now in the 162 at least, not sure if you can get the center punched tracks unless you are already on a waiting list.

Yes the non-center punched is cheaper. Not sure on the availability of either style of the 156 X3, could be awhile, I had mine reserved in like June.

162in 3in installed

I just had mine installed by Carls last week on my new pro.
I went up on Sat to Brundage to get some break in miles on her.
Had carls clutching done and shocks as well. WOW It is a monster.
I would hate to ride behind one is all I have to say. Throws a roost 30ft in the
air. There was around 12in of powder on a 4in base. Stayed on the roads but it was worth the wait.
I think carls has plenty of them in stock now. I heard they got there shipment that they were waiting on.

The other option is to punch the track yourself. This is what I'm doing to run the above drivers with a 2.6 PC.
