$15 aluminum shovels at Jax

I was at Jax yesterday and saw on their sale flyer that they had a decent aluminum shovel on sale for 50% off, making it $15 bucks! I've been looking for a good shovel for years but think most are overpriced at close to $50. I bought one and am pleased with the quality.

Here is a link to the manufacturer's page:

Note- I am in no way affiliated with Jax.

Not a very strong design. Shaft should go into the blade. Strongest designs have a tube that is welded onto the blade which the shaft goes into. Like a BCA or Ortovox shovel.

Wouldn't want someone digging me out of an avalanche with that.

trust me, after being buried in an avalanche you wouldnt care if they dug you out with a tree branch as long as someone dug you out!

I know several people who dont buy some required gear do to cost so they ride without. better to have a cheap shovel then no shovel at all!

Better than no shovel at all?

It is a lifeline shovel and can be found on amazon in different colors..costco also sells them in a two pack for 30$

Is this the best shovel for the job...no. Out of all the shovels would I recommend this shovel...no. Would I spend the extra 50$ and get a more durable shovel with a larger blade and ergonomic design....yes.

Better than no shovel at all...yes.

I really like the D7 from Black Diamond....large blade....curved shaft...moves alot of snow fast

Huh, well I'm not sure. I thought that if a shaft went into part of the blade, and the blade receiving part went further into the blade for strength it was all good. This shovel seems to do it much like the black diamond deploy- once handle is extended. I thought that if there were no reinforcement where the handle went into the blade, that's where it could break off of the blade, to me this shovel seems like it does all of the things that a good shovel does, handle and handle receiver goes into the blade? I carryjust a HMK and its alot like my BCA except it doesn't have an oval shaft. Might be missing something I guess as usual haha...

WOW! That's wierd!

Pretty sure this is the same shovel that I ordered off Amazon last week.

Mamma got me a cpl nice shovels from Target (?) many yrs ago that were alum head with wood handles. They were pretty tough. As I haven't ever seen them since (not that I saw those) and all that seems to be out there these days is the plastic junkers, I saved the alum ones for west and take the plastic ones north.

Those plastic ones won't doo Diddly in avi pack snow!

Well - we lost one off the back of my boys sled at Wolf Creek last yr. Looked all over, but ... :face-icon-small-sad

So - in hopes of finding an alum one I went to Amazon and found this one and read the feedback. It sounded pretty good. I pd $18 each and got free shipping with using "Slow Boat Shipping LLC".

E-mail today said that they had shipped and I should have them by the weekend. We'll see what I think of them then.

Had a apckage come in this morning that I figgered was the shovels. It was about the right size...

Mamma said that it was NOT shovels as it was way too heavy, and besides - the shovels were already under the tree.

Under the tree?

One WAS s'posed to be under the tree for my shovel losing boy, but the other was for me, and I intended to have a look at it to report.

She said to tell you fellers that she thought they looked well built. :face-icon-small-win

I guess I'll have more to report in a few weeks... :face-icon-small-blu

Product Report

The boy opened up our package of shovels yesterday.... :face-icon-small-dis

Shovels look good.
Some features of interest:

The handle is held to the blade by twin spring loaded plungers. So it could be taken apart for stowage reasons.

Also - the handle telescopes out a bit, and is also retained by twin spring plungers.

I am kind of impressed with the twin plungers. That should keep from wearing out or comming apart for a long time. You know the plungers that I mean... You push them down in to allow it to move...

The blade is rolled and welded in the receiver part, where the handle goes into it. Not just rolled.

The T handle it'self is double rivited in.

And one of the most bestest features for a snowmachiner, is the four 3/8" holes popped in the corners of the blade. This should make fastening your bunjies to it a LOT easier, and maybe, just maybe the dumb thing will stay on the machine!

Unit seems like it should stand up fine to use in packed snow apps.

Only feature that I doo not like about it - is that sticker on the back that says "Made in *&^%#! China". I'd pay dbl for the same thing made north of the Rio Grand somewhere!

From a standpoint of using this thing for avi rescue or just digging out your machine. For avi, Shovel should stay in your pack along with probe. And beacon on you . If your machine goes and you are able to self rescue, great, but where is your buddy? The shovel to me is a life saving tool here in the mtns, not a utility tool. The last thing I want is to have the shovel break or become useless in these situations. Avi snow is like concrete, better have the best proven equipment that you can.....just my 2 cents. Be safe!!

I was in charge of getting a shovel for my brother-in-law for Christmas since he is buying my old sled from me. I saw these shovels at my local Fred Meyer for $30 for 2 shovels. I stopped and looked at them. No surprise, "Made in China" and the joints were a bit sloppy, the blade a bit small and the feel was a bit cheap. I ended up getting a deal on an HMK which cost me more money, but I do feel better getting him a better quality tool that I know he will end up using a lot.

I love JAX. They have the selection of REI Without the tree hugging hippies donating to shut down public land.

Thank for the heads up. For $15 it is worth picking up a couple to keep in the cars.

I can't believe people are dogging a guy for not have the correct shovel. What is wrong with evrybody on here? Somebody tries to post a helpful idea. And all you guys can do is cut him down. SAD! Can't we all just get along??
