100% tax increase

The price of smoking went up on Wednesday.

Federal tobacco taxes went up April 1 as part of an increase to pay for expanded federal health insurance programs for uninsured children.

The federal tax on cigarettes is now $1.01 per pack, up from 39 cents. Federal levies on rolling paper, cigars and other tobacco products also jumped.

The higher taxes will pay for expansion of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program, which offers coverage to children without health insurance. President Obama and congressional Democrats approved the tobacco tax increase as part of the SCHIP expansion, which offers federal assistance to more middle class children without health coverage.

The tax increases are driving some smokers to buy products from Indian reservations and online, where some of the levies are not applicable.

Interviewed a tobacco shop owner on TV last night and he was complaining. He said that people were going to have to choose between smoking and eating. Duh!!!!!!!! seems like a no brainer to me, but hey I don't smoke. Seems to me some people (the ones who can least afford it ) Choose to smoke and gamble rather than put food on their tables.

i'm enjoying my last pack of cheap swisher sweets right now. they were $1.50yesterday, today $4.99. thats more than 100 percent. oh well, maybe i'll live longer.

This is good. I work in a hospital and there are many, many patients that are there due to health problems associated with lung disease directly from smoking.
A lot of these people are older people that have destroyed there lungs from smoking for many years and guess what? We are paying for their hospital bill because they are generally medicare patient's when they are older. This tax at least put's some money back in to the system. It is I'm sure by far not enough but it's something. It's sad though that some choose smoking over providing for their families.
This same argument could be made for alcohol. From my experience there are far fewer people hospitalized for that though. Besides, I like to have a couple now and then.

I am totally against these "sin taxes"!

It is truly taxation without representation, which our constitution prohibits.

Alcohol will be next, trust me.

Would you rather them just make it illegal alltogether?
They could do that since nothing good comes out of smoking whatsoever.
At least this way people still have the right to suffocate themselves.

totally agree with you Mafesto. Seems like a divide and conquer mentality. not enough people will protest tobacco taxes to pose a problem. next go after guns and/or ammo with taxes. Maybe like full autos have a $200 federal tax, all guns could be taxed. Ban the youth atvs and cycles and families won't be able to ride together with younger kids. Then sales of larger atvs could decline. These are all habits/hobbies of a small percentage of the populace.

ya but maf but look at all the cash it will raise for these low income obama lovin porch monkeys

all very good points and i believe you are right

I want to send a letter to Obama that says were fighting. So lets take it outside but I really don't think the secret service would take kindly to somebody beating up their pet monkey!:beer;:beer;

HA HA, You said porch monkey! Im glad that our government already taxes me 50% of what I make (income tax, sales tax, property tax, state income tax, fuel tax) and now the tobacco tax has gone up 300%.

AND TO TOP IT OFF, THEY WANT TO TAX RANCHERS $80 A COW/YEAR FOR METHANE POLUTION!!!!!!!

I don't blame the mexicans for heading home.

Me too, my taxes are over 50%.

Just remember, snowmobiles are bad for you also. What if they taxed them 100%? Or motorcycles? Or ski boats? Or conservative thinking? The government has no business deciding your personal responsibilities for you. (Althougth, there are exceptions to that rule, of course)

The best part of all of this is another broken promise by Obama!

Didn't he say 95% of Americans won't see a dime of increased taxes? I'm pretty sure the top 5% of earners in this country are not the only smokers.

Umm what?? That is really stupid, they should pay grain farmers for carbon credits. I am sure the trillions of plants take out a bit of CO2
