10 year old girl arrested for using knife to cut food at school

"School officials say the Ocala 5th grader had brought a piece of steak for her lunch, and had brought a steak knife. According to the report, a couple of teachers took the utensil and called authorities, who arrested the girl and took her to the county’s juvenile assessment center.

"She did not use it inappropriately. She did not threaten anyone with it. She didn't pull it out and brandish it. Nothing of that nature," explained Marion County School Spokesman Kevin Christian, who added that it made no difference what the knife was being used for, they had no choice but to call police.

"Anytime there's a weapon on campus, yes, we have to report it and we aggressively report it because we don't want to take any chances, regardless," Christian said.

The girl now faces a felony charge for possessing a weapon on school property and has been suspended from school for 10 days. The parents of the girl could not be reached for comment, WFTV.com reported."
 
Wow! What has this country become? Sheez, if things were like this in 1992 when I graduated HS, half my class would've been criminals! I had guns in my truck everyday (coyote hunting after class was out) and I always carried a knife in my pocket. Anybody else like this when they were a kid?
 
What a bunch of bull$#%$! Welcome to Florida, the land of people who can't count, leave our broken down cars in the middle of the freeway, Give illegal immigrants more rights and benifits than national born civillians, One of our cities success was built solely on money from drug cartels in the 60's 70's and early 80's, but you can't own lawn darts, and we like to arrest little girls for setting up lemonaide stands and taking steaknives to school. Never mind the GLock 9mm the Janitor smuggled in.
 
Schools are so terrified of being sued that they will go to stupid lengths to cover their azzes.

Wow, arrested the girl? Imagine the emotional damage that does to a young child. I bet they did it right at the school in front of everyone, so she will be bantered from now on about being arrested at school.

If I were her Dad, I would make every attempt to get retribution from the school.

Case ie....right here in Lincoln last year a pevert snuck into a grade school and hid out in bathroom and sexualy assaulted a 6 year old. TERRIBLE TERRIBLE story! I would never want such a thing to happen however the parents are now suing the school for not taking proper precautions. I mean come on they already have a full time cop in the school but he cant be all the places at same time. I feel terrible for that child and there parents but I just do not see how they can hold the schools accountable for this. It isnt like the school hired the teacher or had some sort of hand in this. This is why you HAVE to call it in per the rules. It SUX but I see there point.

EDIT, I think they did the right thing by calling it in but surely the prosecuters would of had the common sense to put a stop to it before actually charging the girl.
 
I am not suprised the school called the cops, liability. We have attorneys to thanks for that, last time I checked I though police still had a thing called "officer discretion." How could they arrest her for that. What happens if they catch a kid farting in school? I bet they would get arrested for illegally adding greenhouse gases to atmosphere. cops like that give cops a bad name.
 
WOW.. I guess I am from a smaller town but In my opinion they took it to far by charging the kid... but I guess yo never know what her intention was after class... I still think it is stupid.. Maybe its because I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night..
 
Crazy World

I live in a rural community and all of the schools have the signs posted “Gun Free School Zone”. Yet this last year they set up one of the Game check stations right in the high school parking lot coming off the mountain. Gee, no longer gun free? Schools across the country have certainly become more liberal. Every time I hear of something this stupid if sure makes our future look pretty grim. I am wondering what the girl was arrested for? At least in my state it is not legal to posses or utilize a steak knife to cut your steak. Makes no sense, Seems like any action against the girl would have to be a school issue, not law enforcement. If I was the involved parent, I would be raising a big stink over the whole issue.
 
My highschool called the sheriffs department on me when I was a Sr. in highschool. They couldnt do anything, even had to return my can of copenhagen due to the fact I was 18 already.

I have always carried a pocket knife, even in school, and yes, 90% of the time I had a gun in my pickup also. Never had a issue.

As far as that guy who was in the girls room. Well our judicial system is at fault for that. Maybe they should actually do something to those sex offenders instead of just slapping their hand.
