09 update shaved head?

Has anyone tried shaving the head on the 08-09 updated kits to get back the compression that was there before? I know slp has a head out to take it back but was just curious if anybody had tried to shave the new stock head. I lost 200-400 r's depending on the situation after the update, and my clutching was almost perfect before that. Local dealer said that I wasn't the only one and the only way to get it back without starting over on the clutching was to bring the compression back up to the old level. Would appreciate any feed back that anyone wants to give.

Was also told that some guys were setting up these sleds to turn 8300-8500 im running the slp single and that that sounded a little high.

thanks guys

If you do have the head cut to get the compression back, make sure to have the squish cut too to keep the same as it has now.
8200 to 8250 is what you wont with SLP pipe not any higher.

MJ... if you have ANY warranty left... that will void the warranty.

Also, I believe that SLP has a special ECU map for their heads... something you cant buy sepertely as far a I know.

Clutch Man is exactly right about the cut... it is not just "shaving the head" ... but also re cuting the squish to be correct for the new volume and matching the piston dome.

1200psi on the forums here, Brad with Power Addiction has his custom heads available at a great price.

IMO... you are going to need a Power Commander or other fuel control box and knowledge of tuning in order to bump the compression on your sled with out risking reliability issues.

I thought about the controller box, wasn't sure if you had to run a box with the slp head. We thought that there might be enough squish if you didnt get to agressive. Was just a thought that i had that would save a guy a little money. If you could do it without having problems. Thought maybe someone had tried it. I was worried about detenation problems thats why i thought i would throw it up here to see if somebody else was braver then me.

Thanks

umm, been turning mine 83-8450 rpm for 3 seasons, and by far it will outperform a sled turning under 8200 rpms, just what I have found with extensive testing...

I had a RMX kit which consisted of a high compression head and modified stock pipe (widened in mid section and cut down at stinger). It really made amazing power especially up high. I think it's the best mod this side of a turbo or big bore kit.

The thing you really have to be careful of is the mapping. If you run the 2010 updated map, it is very sensitive on the detonation. I went back to the stock 2009 map and it worked very well. I always ran 6:1 race fuel so about two gallons for a full tank.

I sold the sled, but my next mod was going to be EGT's for use in fuel modification with the PCV. I think there was even more power available but I wasn't comfortable doing the changes with out EGT's.

What elevation are you typically running at? I'm running 6-9 usually and was just curious what set up you were using to get that high a revs. I'm running slp single with slp intake kit, i cant remember my clutch set up will have to look. What pipe are you running and did you have to reclutch after the update?

If you reread this post what kind of rpm's are you turning on your sled. I was told it was the guys at fastrax that were turning these kind of rpm's. Now thats rumor not facts, so if any of those guys care to way in that would be great.

thanks for the info

I usually ride 6000 to 9000 feet in elevation. Have been running the SLP Head since the update was done last October. There is no map from SLP that goes with their head that I am aware of. They did not tell me or recommend one when I bought it. They did recommend octane boost with at least premium fuel. Did not have any problems with detonation. In January I also started with the PCV. Used Jims map then called SLP for their map and they emailed that to me. They said with that they only had 1 map weather you had their head or not. A few weeks ago I went out for a ride...kind of spaced the octane boost when I filled up and was about 45 to 50 degrees out, check engine light started coming on alot when you got on the throttle. Never enough that it put it in limp mode as when it came on I would let off right away. Nursed it back to the trailer and put octane boost in it and did not have an issue the rest of the day. They are right on the edge with the fuel on detonation I think. I do not know if a different map would make a difference or not. Like I said I am using the original 10 map they used with the update last October.

I run from sea level up as high as 8000 ft or so..most riding will be at the lower elevations especially from 1000 ft up to 6500 ft...I did loose about 100 rpm with the 10 flash, and ended up pulling a little rivit weight to get it back... this thread has my clutching setup in it....

Carl's shaved my head and re-machined a slightly different squishband for $75, money well spent to have it done right out of the box and not having to worry if its the head cut or some other issue with fueling giving you grief.
