09 Nytro MTX Issues?

Hi guys/Gals

I'm in the market for a sled, my local dealer has a new 09 Nytro MTX (or 2) that the price isn't too bad on. I've heard the 11's onwards were improved, but I'd like to know the issues (or potential ones) with the 09

Thanks in advance for your help

Clive

The 2008-2009 and had a narrow stance then 2010.But the geometry is diffrent between the 2008-2009.The 2008 used a 16.5" shock and the 2009 and newer used a 17.5" shock. The 2008 and 2009 sub frames are weaker then the 2010.
The 2010 and newer have a diffrent rear skid which is a lot better. The rear skid has fox floats in it.
Some of the 2008-2009 had starter relay problems. They get moisture in them. Its best if you buy one you put dielectric grease in them and the problem is solved.
The hand warmers suck but there is a fix for that also. There is a guy on totallyamaha.com that makes a yamaheater.

Is the later sub-frame a direct replacement (worse case scenario)...and how much worse is the older skid? I'm pretty new to sledding so would it be less noticeable to me?

Thanks for the quick response

08' had the worst subframe, 09 is stronger, 10 is stronger than 09. Yes they are a direct replacement.

The rear suspension (skid) is decent, it's just based on technology/weights of the early 2000's. Yamaha didn't get with the program until they built the 2010 rear suspension. 08 skid's have a softer rear shock than 09's. 10's are full air shocks all the way around and I believe that saved like 15-20lbs.

I'm not sure if you would notice the difference between the two or not. I've never gotten a chance to ride the 2010 suspension.

Couple more

- I think they changed the tunnel on the 2010's more taper?
- No sway bar on 2010's when they went to the air shocks on the front end

Thanks everyone, If any one has anything else to add..please do so.

Just want to ensure my money will go to the right place! (which I know is Yammie...just figuring out year and end cost now)

Correct

A little more detail, the running boards angle up towards the top of the tunnel at a more aggressive degree on the 10'+.... (I think these are right) 11* vs 9* on the 08/09.

Also instead of the running boards running all the way to the rear bumper like on the 08/09's they stop closer to the rear suspension mounts. This allows the sled to dig instead of getting hung up on the running boards in REALLY deep snow.

The front suspension geometry changed on the 08/09 to the 10+, it's called the FXG2 suspension. I don't know what exactly changed in the geometry but like tmk50 said they widened the ski stance, used the 17.5" fox float 2 shock and removed the sway bar.

I think you have to ask yourself what you are going to do with it. If you are going to do a bunch of mods then get the 09 because you will replace all the same things anyway on the new one. If you want a sled that is pretty good out of the box get a 10 or newer. Depends on price too. If you can get the 10 for close to the same price I wouldn't mess with the older one.

I have a 09 and 10. The 10 is a much better sled. I am changing tunnel, skid track, shocks and front suspension on my 09 so it will be comparable. If it were me i would buy 10 or newer. Dont get me wrong. You can have plenty of fun on a stock 09. Just don't hop on a 10 or newer...

I would get the newer for sure if you are not going to do any mods right away.

Wilmot, so which sled is the boost going on? You might make your 09 so good you will want to ride it all the time.

Let me know if you need someone to ride with this year. I like to ride with other Nytro owners. Just doesn't happen enough.

I'm trying to get in on this! Let's make it happen! I haven't once ridden with another nytro unless I rented all of them...

I live in nl and have the 08. I love the sled but it has a huge learning curve. The biggest problem your gonna have is the same one I have the tank will only get you about 100kms, I have a rack with extra fuel but I really need the bigger trail tank.

The subframe issue is a big one it's always on my mind when riding. Do you have a place to store it or will it be outdoors? It is no trouble to bring home 30lbs of snow under the back tunnel after a day of riding.

If prices up there are anything like down here, your pro ally looking at a 2-3k in price difference between the 09 and 10.

If that is true don't let the subframe keep you from saving that kind of money, if you hit something no matter what sled something is gonna give.

You guy's pm me your #. I'm off all winter, let's RIDE. I'm installing MPI S/C on my 10 along with some other goodies. There's a few yamaha guy's in this area we just need to hook up.:becky:

The absolute best thing you can do with an 09 is dump the skid and track. Pick your poison on skids - I went timbersled and couldn't be happier. Tracks you can go with a power claw or challenger extreme. I ended up with a smoking deal on a powerclaw and so far its worked well for me.

I rode my 08 stock for a year, and the only way to make it work is to suck the limiter straps up TIGHT. You end up with a bunch of ski pressure, but it won't trench as much.

If it is staying stock, a newer Nytro will suit you better. ***However*** Depending on the price, you could potentially spend less by getting the 09 and throwing lightweight parts on it to address the issues it has while saving some weight/money at the same time.

I personally think the subframe thing is overblown on the newer ones. I have an 09 and I hit a lot of stuff with mine and never bent the subframe. The only thing that finally bent it was when I hit a rock sidehilling that stopped the sled dead in its tracks. So all the weight was on that ski also.

Just get the sled and enjoy it. I still say I wouldn't ride without getting a relocator and rollover valve from OFT. Cheap piece of mind.

How do I get a job that is off all winter and still makes enough to afford two Nytros? Sign me up.

X2 makes it work a LOT better in powder, a different track makes it even better but that's a "mod".

I agree on the subframe but I have an 09 as well and it's supposed to be stronger than the 08. I can't count on both hands how many times I've run into trees/rocks on my sled. I've done just like truebluemax did and ran straight into a tree with my right a-arms and it stopped me dead in my tracks. No damage at all. THEN I rolled my sled down an 100 yard ice hill end over end/barrel rolls. The A-arms one one side are bad but the subframe still looks like it can handle more abuse before I have to swap it out.

i have an 08 mtx and have not bent the subframe, ridden the sled a lot over 4000 miles of mountain riding. if you do bend it the new updated subframe is stronger and not too expensive to replace i think the part is under $500. Also, i love the wide and long running boards on my 2008 lots of room for your feet to move around. i honestly would not want the newer running boards compared to the 08/09 boards. everyone says the 08/09 tunnell "hangs up" in the snow but i.m.o. i think thats marketing bs. I have been riding mine in ridiculously deep powder for 4 years with no trouble getting around and no "hanging up". My advice: Try to get the 2009 cheap, put a timbersled rear skid in it, new track, clutching/gearing and still be money ahead. As for the track, i would recommend a challenger 2.25 or 2.5. tried the powerclaw on my nytro was not impressed compared to the challenger.
