Now that there's a season on the 2010 M8's what do you all think?
Which is the better Mtn machine 09M1000 or 10M8?
Let's hear it!

btw...Yeah, I know the 1000 kills it with 2k in upgrades ie y/pipe/can/egts/intake/box not askin aboot that set up

The 10 M8 is a great sled but I have yet to find one that can outclimb my properly setup almost stock 09 with about 30lbs taken off.(it is about dead even or I can get a sled length on them) Dont get me wrong the 10's are an awsome sled but the 09 1000 should stomp the piss out if it with only very minor tweeks. I have ridden with and on the
09 M1000, 10 M8 and 09 M8 and personally like the 09 M8 better.IMO

If you are asking which is better stock vs stock, Id GUESS the '10 M8. I'd like to know also. But knowing that the additional $$ into the 1000 would kill the M8, why wouldn't you go that route? $2k is a little steep. $1000 to $1200 would do it.

Are you talking bone stock? There are not too many completely stock machines out there. I would say for the price point get the m1000. the dealers are giving them away for a lot cheaper than the 10 m8. And with the money you save you can get some light weight goodies as well as some hp improvements and still have beer money left over from your savings. One more thing get the 162.

It'll be 153" No debate there. Anyone else who has actually ridden (with) both have any insight? Thanks

My 09 M8 has the slp performance package and runs right at 8200rpm at 8-10,000ft. The porting and pipe setup on the M8 just rips. Now to the question, I ride with an m1000 all the time and we have a second buddy with an M1000 that comes every now and again. Both of these 1000's are pretty much stock except for some clutching changes, can, and one has a powerclaw track. My ported 09 M8 has quite a bit more power than the stock M1000 and weighs a lot less. Myself I would consider an M1000 but only if it's an 09 or newer and has an SLP or Speedwerx pipe, full clutch kit, and fuel box than the M1000's run. I am just not impressed with the stock M1000.

09 m1000 162 with slp single pc3 vs 2010 m8 153 stock on a 600' pretty steep hill the 1000 by 1/3 of the hill and the m8 rider was 80# lighter. Now it depends on what kind of riding you do for point and shoot not even close if your more of a tree rider and a guy that don't like mods 09 or 10 m8 might be a better choice if you can find a 1000 to try that would be the best, but I love mine.

Coming from a M10 rider, If i were you i would just go with the M8 and just keep it stock and ride the hell out of it. Plain and simple M10s are hard on belts (yes i know there are a few of you out there who have 2k miles on a belt)

M8 resale seems to be a little better as well.

av8er-
Just to keep the numbers real for my case
How does it work out for a 2009 M1k 153 std vs a 2010 M8 153 std?

I modded the crap out of my last M8 and it was a fun sled but for all that money all it took was an intake, Y, and Can on the 1000 and it would beat my 8.

So yeah if I do the 2010 M8 it will get an intake and a can and that'll probably be the end of it.

Mods are expensive... Do you guys with the aftermarkets pipes on the 1000 really run without egts? I can't get the $1100 quite worked out. You must get some smokin deals. Are the extra engine mounts necessary with this set up to keep the belts on it?

LOL then what are you asking? I would go with whatever suits yer riding needs. 1000 if you want serious grunt and low end power. The 8 if you want to "Just play". If your future lies in the realm of boost go with the M8........

Reread original post and find question mark:face-icon-small-win

I am asking for helpful opinions from people with experience around both sleds.

Ok go with the 1000. I got my 09 down to 441 lbs dry wit hthe D&D single pipe setup from y - can. Timbersled intake 56/64 bdx gearing and I havent seen an 0-10 m8 without boost that would come close to even smelling the exhaust. So go with the 1000.....................

Alex,

I rode with a guy that had an 010 hcr (stock with 260 miles) and an 08 1000 with Y, intake, can, he said he really liked the 010 hcr, but when we ran them there was no comparison. On a small hill (comparable to the little hill @ Jones) and the 1000 was a good chunk of lengths ahead. (5ish or better?)
My 141 against that 08 was about 1/2 of what that one had on the hcr for an example. (3ish lengths) I would assume weight & track were the main factors there, aside from can, it was stock weight.
This was in about 1 foot of snow on hard base.

I rode a stock 1000 with a 162 for this last weekend... holy crap. Now I see why people dog on that sled so bad, what a pig. I can't imagine riding a stock 1000 weight wise, it was painful. We were there to film, so we didn't ride that much, but I've never ridden so little & been SO FREAKING SORE.

btw, ten or so belts later, I really wish I had just listened to some of the folks on here & added an extra motor mount.

I am going to get the 8 and ride the piss out of it. No extra motor mounts or fuel controllers or egts or potential belt blowers... Got too burnt on all the mods last time around and at this point don't want a project sled.

From all the input, I don't think you could lose with either set up. If I had the time and money I would have one of EACH! (OK really I'd turbo the 8 and be done with it)

I think it's really like most of the guys say above. Tractor torque and point and shoot winner vs. a "quicker" responding motor on a slightly lighter sled.
The 8 will lose 20 lbs within a week of my owning it and will cost less overall.

Thanks again for the advice everyone.

BCIL yeah I rode an 07 162 m1k with a can on it down south earlier this year and it was a tank. Kept crawling in the deep stuff but Not for me either.

Go with the one thousand. No doubt about it. I have an 08 m1 and a 10 m8. The m1 is stock except for a y pipe and can, My m8 has full slp pipe setup and intake but still cant out climb the m1.

I'll probably turbo the 8 when the time comes, assuming the 2010 motor shows that it has longevity with boost.

I know the 8 won't outclimb a 1000, especially with mods, but I think it will be pretty fun to throw around and do some light jumping with... and it would be nice if I can gain enough rider skill to make it up most of what the mod 1000 boys are climbing, maybe an extra turn or 2:)

What elevation are you at mammoth? Sounds like you 08 M1k is a good one.

stock to stock, 2010 m8. As for mods, 09 and newer m1000. Thinking turbo- 09 m8. the 2010 turbos are finicky, but may be worked out by next season. If your power hungry just get the 09 m1000 then full pipe, then turbo. I will never ride without egts again. (cost way more not to have them)
