09 iq 800

Im sure this is an old topic but what is the most sucessful fix for high engine temps, to the point of overheating at times when no one else is, i have a 09 iq 800. i have read everything from just installing ice scratchers to radiators in the front. what works? Thanks for any help.

Here's my suggestions:
1) Install some sort of ice scratchers - I use Slide Kicks cable scratchers w/carbide tips so I don't have to worry about put them up or down.
2) Ensure coolant is full and all the air is bled out of the system
3) Make sure your flap isn't all floppy and getting pulled up into the tunnel while riding - I see this all the time
4) Try some Redline Water Wetter

Now FWIW, I'm running "Engine Ice" as my coolant, it's good to -27. There's other types of coolant that works better than ethylene glycol, I can't remember the brands - I think it's Evans. It's a proven fact that the higher the amount of glycol based coolant added to water increases engine temps as the glycol mix doesn't absorb heat that well, but we have to enough to keep it from freezing.

The more expensive options are to add the Poo bulkhead cooler and reservoir bottle that come stock on the stand RMKs or add an additional tunnel cooler such the one from FTX Motorsports.

D-8 HEAT ISSUE

I ADDED THE EXTRA IDLER WHEELS ON THE REAR SKID AND FULLY CLIPPED THE STOCK EVERY OTHER CLIP TRACK AND IT MADE A BIG DIFF. IN TEMPS ON HARDPACK OR GROOMED TRAILS.

IMO a portion of the t-stat is needed. In my roadracing days, I would cut the spring and valve out of the t-stat, leaving just the center hole for the coolant to flow through constantly. The reason behind this is you need some sort of minor flow restriction to keep the coolant in/around the cylinders and head long enough to absorb the heat.

Try the scratchers, and bleed your coolant system of air, then go from there.

Yes, that's exactly what I did. Cut the body out of it and then reinstall the remainder. I've been running this season without it and no problems. Just give yourself some extra time for warm-up. I usually start up and then get dressed in my gear and all is ready to go!

my rear suspension has 2 bogie wheels right were i should mount the scratchers, is it ok to move the front set a couple holes towards the front and the center wheels to the rear holes almost all the way back?

Took the first ride yesterday with the new ice scratchers! What a differance never got over 145 and was consistant at 126 to 134 most of the time on hard pack. Thanks for the help!
