09 D8 163 clunking sound coasting Downhill

JDen- Thanks for checking your track tension I will tighten it up some more and check it out? Did you hear it on the clutch side only? or both sides. It is always on my left foot side.

It's just the wet heavy snow build up in the tunnel. My 800 and my uncles 7 was bad this weekend. And my track was ratcheting which did not help.

If i remember right, track tension is supposed to be 10lbs of weight 16 inches from the rear axle with 3/8 to 1/2 of sag.

The sounds always seemed to be coming from my left side. I don't know why, I can't explain it or even begin to make up a reason!

I just purchased a new 2010 800 and it does the exact same thing. The clunk sound is coming from the secondary, something is not right.

the Polaris secondary makes a clunking noise when it engages...if you are in tight trees you may get to hear it alot. Like I said before...coming from a different brand or never have had a "team" secondary it is louder than anything you have ever had before..it is normal for this clutch.

Same reason I outlined before. Look at the helix on the Team it has a flat open cut to a reverse notch. It holds the sled in low gear when in reverse. When you decelerate hard or apply the brake and the secondary is closed (low track speed) the reversal of torque slides the secondary into the reverse notch. When you apply torque again it quickly moves out of the reverse notch back to the helix's ramp. This is the clunk and also I believe where the harsh noise is when you're on the brakes, it moves back and forth in this notch.
This is only present on the electronic reverse models and one big up side of this is the downhill engine braking as it "locks" into this notch as long as you keep the belt engaged, kinda like grade braking, which is a real nice feature of the electronic reverse sleds. If you look closely at the helix and the way this clutch works you will see it clearly.
I wish it wasn't quite as harsh but I believe it to be normal function.

We are talking about two different sounds here, the noise from the track drivers when braking going downhill sounds like the track is racheting. The clunking sound from the secondary clutch does not repeat over and over unless you are braking and getting back on the throttle over and over. I rarely hear the sound from my drivers anymore now that my track has stopped streching and is adjusted properly. The clunking sound from secondary also happens if you go from reverse to forward and give it to much throttle. Two totally different sounds, at least on my sled.

I agree with trenchmaster-around here we call it the Rocky Mountain Clunk(RMK) in the secondary-The sound I'm hearing is only when I'm coasting down hill and it is a fast repeated thumping by my left foot. Always the left side thing seems very odd to me!! also I had a little engine stumble to after a long WOT- I blipped the throttle and it went away-It has done it a couple of times now- I am still on the 1st set of plugs so I think I'll change them and see what happens

Had a similar situation on my D8...Track was extremely loose and would ratchet when under a load on a climb and make this "clunking" nosie while off the throttle coming downhill. It would occur everytime that I applied any brake unless I locked the track up completely. Tightened the track (I do believe it is 10 lbs 16 inches like stated above but more than 3/8 of an inch, maybe 1 1/8"??) an the situation was resolved. I don't tighten my track to the recommned setting but rather a bit looser and have never had any problems.

Are you new to Polaris by any chance? When I came from the SkiDoo world to Polaris that was my first question as well....the clutch engages with a loud clunk unlike the other company. It is normal..if you have vented sides like mine it is even louder of course.

The iced driver sound is more of a rumble..track ratcheting..sort of. IF iced drivers it will vibrate with a rumble if bad enough...keep track tension to spec and spray marine grade dry lube on the drivers.

I noticed mine more when i had my vents put on my sled....it clunks LOUD when ever i grab a hand full of brake.

Noise seems to be fixed

Well, it seems my track has stopped stretching on my 09 d8. I have continued to tighten it as it stretches, and now the ratcheting noise I have been dealing with finally seems to have gone away, ALMOST completely.
