09 D8 163 clunking sound coasting Downhill

When ever I'm going downhill and coasting I hear a clunking sound on the clutch side- sounds almost like chain slap but it is coming from the wrong side-also seems to be intermitant on the volume and feel? Could snow buildup in the tunnel cause this? I did check track tensions and that is good. What else should I check? Could chain sounds transmit to other side?

How many miles are on your sled? My sled made clicking noises when it was new. The noise stopped after the track finished stretching, pretty sure it was from the center track driver, just needed to wear itself in.

There's a couple of things that happen. The driven like to kick to the reverse cut and that makes a banging noises. You just give it some gas to get it to kick out.
One other thing that I really hate the most is that the drivers have to much play in them. If you raise the rear end up in a shop and run the track, the track cogs will crawl up on the drivers. When the track in down and under torque, the drivers are always grabbing the proper side of the cog. I have lots of people ask but it just seems to be one of those things ya just sort of get used to.

drivers

have you checked to see if you have ice build up between the drivers?I have had problems with mine.I especialy notice it doing it on 36 degree plus days.I have sprayed between the drivers with pam cooking spray and it seems to help.Any body else have any solutions?

I will second checking for ice build up on the drivers. I had my first experience with this a couple weeks ago. Took me a while to figure it out then finally noticed the ice build up.

THE TRACK IS LOOSE MINE ALWAYS DID IT COMMING DOWN HILL THE TRACK BALLS UP AT THE FRONTAND MAKES NOISE

My 700 and 800 both do the same thing, it is the secondary that your hearing. Both of my sleds have extro drivers and I know I havn't had any ice problems. Also so you know, the team tied does the same thing, I've got them on both sleds also.
Hope this helps

If it is the secondary what do I need to do to it? I pulled the side cover off and sound didn't change seemed to be coming from under the tunnel at my left foot. My friend has the exact same sled and his does not seem to do as consistantly as mine. Also it only seems noticed on coasting on a downhill not on the flats. I did tighten the track and it still makes the sound. I also pulled snow out of the tunnel area between the paddles and the front part of the tunnel but didn't change

I will stand behind the loose-track idea. Mine had same problem, exactly the same problem, kept tightening the track and it went away.

I will tighten some more see if that helps. I use the old stand by 3 finger method at the mid point of the rails for track tension(yes I know it's kinda rednecking it) but has worked in the past-I'm already at about 2.5fingers so I will tighten to 2 fingers

Your track is way to loose! Polaris spec is less than that for sure. I think it's about 1" of sag with a ten pound weight on the track at mid point, can't remember for sure but it's less than 3 fingers.

Are you new to Polaris by any chance? When I came from the SkiDoo world to Polaris that was my first question as well....the clutch engages with a loud clunk unlike the other company. It is normal..if you have vented sides like mine it is even louder of course.

The iced driver sound is more of a rumble..track ratcheting..sort of. IF iced drivers it will vibrate with a rumble if bad enough...keep track tension to spec and spray marine grade dry lube on the drivers.

Mines the same, where it is the harshest for me is under braking going down hill. What I think it is is that I installed delrin washers in my secondary and because it is now "slippery" it hunts very harshly back and forth between the reverse notch and the forward position. I am almost sure it is in the secondary, definately on the PTO side. I have almost conceded that it will be OK but it is harsh enough that I am a little concerned about the impact on the rollers and their life as a result. Does this make any sense?

I still say track tension. Just ran out to the garage and checked mine out, I have to push down pretty hard with one hand to get 3 fingers under it anywhere. And by pretty hard i mean like, probly 40 pounds or so, just a guess. Just keep tightening it up, if it gets to the point where its obviously way too tight and the sound is still there...then back it off. When I had the issue I noticed it on the downhill after a climb up the mountain when just on and off the brakes, and on the groomed trail coming down, mostly around corners with moguls-off the throttle.
