08 m1 Max RPM with mods question

Hello, I did do a search but did not have much luck.

I recently bought a 08 M1000 with a 162 2 1/4 track on it. It has 720km on it.

The Motor has as aftermarket muffler on it, but I am not sure what it is. Looks like a car muffler lol. Stock pipe, stock y pipe. The guy I bought it off said the ECU got re flashed to the 2009 ECU Specs to deal with some lean mid range issues or something like that.

The sled had a 046 Belt on it which I was told by my dealer is a M8 belt, and is alot softer of a belt, I should be running the 060 belt he said. (Belt is 114$ for a 046 and 208$ for the 060 humm.. 2 belts almost for same price)

I noticed that the secondary isn't shimmed properly as the belt rides flush with the clutch and most sleds should have the belt 1/8 - 1/4 inch above) There is massive belt deflection anyhow. So I bought some shims for it.

Talking to the dealer he stated that I could run a aftermarket y pipe with a muffler with no fuel controller. I ordered up an SLP y pipe.

I am wondering what I should be clutching to. The dealer said around 7800, but I read here that maybe it should be 7300. What should I be clutching with the stock y pipe and stock pipe and aftermarket muffler?

The dealer said I would be ok with the y pipe and muffler. I am wondering if this setup would be ok for riding around town in trails and what not. We live at around 1900-2200 feet (2200 is where I'd be riding normally)

The mountains close to here are 5000-7000 feet. Is it going to be safe brapping around town here, or do I have to baby it. will the ECU tame down the timing and power when I am down low with its O2 sensor?

What RPM in the mountains pulling up a hill should I be looking at with the Y pipe. I am a big guy, 300 pounds as well.

046 is the hard compound belt and the 060 is the softer one, never had much luck with the 060's as they are more prone to grenade and will fade RPM from you on multiple pulls as they heat soak, I as most on here prefer the 046. Running a Y pipe safely without a controller or regulator depends upon many different variables firstly where your machines factory fuel pressure is running at is a key factor as any given M1K has pressures ranging from 42 to 50 PSI if yours is to the high side you have alot more wiggle room with the aftermarket Y especially when long duration engine loads are commanded (deep heavy snow, long pulls on a hill, etc). That being said if it's at the lower end you could lean out and burn down on a long pull or if you give it any extra air via air box mods or venting down the road mid range and top end fueling may not be there and you will lean out and risk burndown. The factory probe in the pipe is a thermistor style probe and reads temperature via electrical resistance do not confuse it with an O2 style sensor as the stock probe does not read Air/Fuel ratio but strictly temperature and it will not compensate for any of your mods via more fuel being added or timing reduction, as far as RPM goes 7200-7350 is all I would want to see if your running the stk pipe SLP or Speedworks 7600-7800 is where they will like to run.

As far as your RPM's are concerned when stock the M1's should be in the 7200-7300 range. With a full pipe kit SLP says 7800. I run the SLP kit setup from Racin Station and through all of their testing they said the SLP is actually adeal at 7600-7700. I pull consistent at 7650-7720 and I love it. I also use the 046 belt. Cheaper, longer life, and it will give you an indication as to when it needs replaced. It will give you the green fray under the hood, the 060 will just explode.

ARRGGHH. I talked to the dealer guy again today. He said no, the 060 is the belt to use and not the 046 as the 046 will blow right away. I wonder if you guys or him have the wrong number. He swears I need the 060 belt and he said he owns the store and owns a m1.

He also said that the y pipe and muffler will be fine with the stock motor riding around town here.

And yes, 7200-7400 stock, or 7800 with full system is also what he said.

And my y pipe is not here today so I can't install it tonight before I goto the mountains tomorrow morning.
So confusing with people all saying different things.
I have the belt in my truck the 060 and it looks hard as hell. tonight I am going to put the new belt on and shim it up if it needs it. :spit:

I know 3 very reputable guys at 3 different dealers, (two of them are owners) around here and every one of them says the 046 belt is the way to go. I've never used anything different and have put more than 500 miles on every belt and never blown one. Only once did I even start to get a fray. I just always replace at 500 because the kind of riding I do I want to make sure I get a tight fitting belt. Of course you can try the 060 and you may love it, but I've heard horror stories, and I know for certain it's the 060. Either way have fun, some of us don't even have a ride in yet.

K, I already bought the 060, the 046 is in it right now. I bought shims. cause the belt doesnt ride high enough in the secondary for my liking.

My friend is telling me use 060. I'll try this and see how it works out. I like the idea on how much cheaper the 046 is. pretty much 2 of those to 2 060. So I will more then likely use the 046 next belt. See how this one wears.

I also would like to thank you guys for your help as well. I stopped mountain riding a long time ago to try something different but am getting back into the sport. I had a 95 Summit 670 with a HUGE 136 1 3/4 track, Then bought a 98 Summit 670x, which we then did a drop and roll and a 151 2 inch track. I bought this sled new and it still runs. But its underpowered and showing its age now. 12k on it lol first motor made it to 8800km. Its a good Ice fishing sled now.

Now I am upgrading to a 1k cat. Scary stuff as I was always a doo guy untill late with many stories of crank/motor issues/frame issues/tunnel issues. etc. going wrong with the newer doos

Listen to everyone on here the 046 is the way to go. Ever though your Cat dealer is trying to get more money out of you. All the guys I know out here in B.C use the 046 and the dealers also recommend it as well. Many reputable mod shops will aslo say use the 046.

Well I just got off the phone with Leading Edge Kawie in Kamloops, and he also confirmed the 060 is the harder compound belt which will take more heat then the 046. He said alot of people have been using the 046. Like I said I'll try this belt, if it doesn't perform I'll switch up to the 046 belt.

EIther will work. I've used them both, but only because my sled came with an 060 belt. Had 1 046 and 1 060 and together they lasted about 1000mi. The 060 didn't grenade any worse than the 046. I had enough time to shut it down when I heard it coming apart.
IMO, save $100 and run the 046.

Your dealer is a tard, make back to back pulls with that 060 and you will see why we use 046 belts.
Stock pipe 7200-7400rpm
SW-SLP pipe 7450-7800rpm IMO, recommended 76-7800rpm

I am 95% sure with a y pipe and can under 8000 feet I could melt down the motor in 30sec. and still way to lean at higher elevations.

If your dealer is pushing all this info he is not the guy you want to be dealing with.

Well I thank everyone for their comments. I havn't put the Y Pipe in yet as I am waiting for it to come in. I tried the 060 out and so far so good, It was cloudy day and we were breaking trail not really hill climbing much so all is well. Thanks.

When in doubt.....

When in doubt listen to the boys on Snowest and their recommendations. If your dealer says you should be fine with your mods you mentioned in your posts.....I would find another dealer. I'm with WyoBoy on this one...you can melt that baby down in no time at all without a fuel controller. When it comes down to M1000, I would put my money on WyoBoy and go with his advice as he is a wealth of knowledge on these sleds. You got yourself a great sled, I hope you enjoy the heck outta it this winter.
