08 Dragon Regulator and ECU Burned UP!!

Total mileage was 1736 and 160 miles was with total rebuild, machine was running great. Put it in reverse than went forward and stalled, would not start so i called Greg Coen he said to hold throttle wide open til it starts. After many pulls it started, than everything fried up and smoked. So luckily was able to call a friend to pull me back (stupid by myself, lesson learned).
I took machine back home to Coen's shop, he robbed parts off a 2010 on the show room floor, called me the next day stating machine is ready to go again.
Only ridden on to trailer so far. This is the kind of dealership everyone should have, standing by the customer and willing to rob another machine to get me going again. Greg has stood behind all of us with are Harley's as well. Would recommend him to anyone, if you have a problem give him a call

this is normal stuff for a dragon my o9 and 08 did the same thing now i have tye 10 up date and it has less power good sled thow i love walking in the snow

140 miles on my 08 with the 10 update and it seems to run BETTER than the first motor. The 09 rebuild sucked in comparison. I hit 8450 on my Carl's clutching, which is 100 more R's than I had before. May have to add wieght now. Seems like that means more power.?
 
Glad to hear someone is getting more RPM!!!!!!!!!! and what are the symptoms of the Regulator going out causing the stator to fry?? I had a reg go out and all the light bulbs burnt out in about 10 seconds did you have any kind of warning when this happened ,,I put a 2010 reg in my 09 just to be safe! Mabe Mountain horse can chime in and give us a clue as to what to watch for??
 
This is not only on the 8's, have a cousin that has an '09 600SB CFI and his ECU went up in smoke as well. Waiting on parts from the slowest damn dealership in Alaska, Big Lake Powersports, will never deal with those yo-yo's again either. Maybe tomorrow, I gotta make sure he gets the voltage regulator as well.
 
The regulator can fail with no noticeable symptoms, unless you were running egts of a wideband.
 
My regulator smoked as I was idling. Shut it off and went to take off, then smoked the ecu. Have the 2010 regulator now. Waiting for more snow now to run it.
 
Mine went last year as well. Right at the end of winter. Only drove it for about a tank or so of gas after it was fixed. Now when I took it in when my 2010 updated motor scored on me, they found out it's shot again. So my dealer ordered a new ECM as well. But it sounds like Polaris doesn't think that a faulty ECM would or could cause a motor burn down. So we still don't know why I'm pumping more top ends through than gas. But we are going to replace it anyway. As it was been through two voltage regulator failures already. If it's fixed by Christmas and can last for two days on our trip to the mountains then I'll be happy. After that Somebody else can have it.
 
Please explain?? why if you have a WB or EGT's

When mine went out, it still ran fine, no funny lights or MFD issues like some have reported. We determined it from the fact that it started running lean for no other reason.

Don't worry, Ive been through two already. My 08 has been in the shop 15 times since Ive had it. Its spent a total of 10 weeks of its life there. Everytime I go to start it I pray it runs. It like a stripper. She only works when she wants.

symptoms

So, if your ECU and/or regulator go bad, other than not running, what are the symptoms? No spark? Engine fire/sputter at all, or completely dead? When you say that you "smoked" these components, is there smoke and burnt electrical smell? I have 08 D8, just got it back from dealer recall/rebuild, and you guys are making me nervous:confused: Maybe I should take a pre-emptive strike and replace these 2 components NOW with the 10's:confused: What do they cost? Any help appreciated.
 
Same old shi.... differant day. My speedo went goofy (flashed on and off) and then the thing went up in smoke. My old dealer said its like a christmas tree light string....one thing goes, it all goes and Polaris hasn't addressed this problem as they have been busy with other problems. Good Luck
 
my 09 800 did same thing in Feb. speedo off at low rpm on at high rpm. made back to trailer stopped at dealer and told them I had herd of simular things on others and burned up ECU. They said not the problem. Went home and road sled 2 miles engine began to rev. up on own and headlight would go on and off. smoke from under hood. melted ecu and plastic cover on it. took back to dealer and told them it would have been easier to just replace reg. and ecu before fire! ran fine after replacing both
 
Sleds

Make sure your dealer orders you in a regulator the later ones are fixed and on many sleds this wont happen but if it makes you feel better i would get the later built one and put it in.I had one 08 do it and after that so far so good.
