08 Dragon 700 questions.

I have received mixed opinions about an issue with my sled. I bought it from a guy who has it clutched for 6000-10000 feet. I took it out for it's first ride at 9000-9300 feet and it was slow. I maxed out at 60 mph @ 8100 rpm. This was on a flat trail with fresh snow but packed out.

My one buddy says it has to be gearing but another said clutching. I plan on getting the 8000-12000 foot kit but had no intention of re-gearing it.

The clutch engages at 3200 rpm and the sled will hit the power band at 6100 rpm. I would like for it to hit the band a little quicker so I can boost over bumps and what ever else is in the way. Changing the helix should correct this problem, right?

I am use to my 04 800 and am a little bummed at the seemingly lack of power in the new sled.

I will first change the clutching but didn't expect it to be such a dog.

Check out the TECH TIPS THREAD under the INCREASING YOUR IQ "sticky" at the top of the page.

Hope this helps

Is it still all stock clutching, and gearing. I have a 2007 dragon rmk, and I run it alot in vaelmount. We are around 6500 to 8000 feet. I was disipointed in the power as well, because I could not pull over 7000 rpm. That sled stock needs to see 8000-8200 rpm for max power. I now run 60 gram weights and a white /red spring in the primary, but still stock gearing. The sled is engaging to low at 3200. It should be up around 4200. I have seen a broken primary clutch spring cause this, it will also hold back your max rpm. It made a big difference on the sled, I can get 8000-8100 now and the sled works good. Also helps I am only 175lbs. If you are looking for some help on it I would recomend Bachus racing in Mara Lake BC. They are very good at setting those sleds up. Good luck.

Dragon 700 If you notice, you don't get much more then 80 hp at 6100. needs to be higher. This is from dynotech research, they are awsome, 20$ a year for a membership.

Great info!!

I recently bought an 08 700 155 and am going to Cooke City next week. The machine is entirely stock. Looking for opinions on whether to run 10-58s or 10-60s. I'm guessing I'll be riding anywhere from 7500-9500 feet. I know there are not too many stock riders left out there.....

I rode an 04 VE 800 last time I was out there and believe I went with 60s.

Thanks....

I would run the 58's if it is all stock. I run 60's in mine at about 6000-8000 feet, and I have a pipe, and can, and a different helix and in the secondary. I get about 8000rpm.

Thanks for the info Adam, another guy also said he runs 58s at that elevation. So 58s it will be.........

Right on, have fun, when that chassis is dialed in and running right it is a very fun sled.

Bring 56's also for Cooke - I always run 2 grams lighter there than the same elevation anywhere else. Heck, Ive even ran some piped 700's that needed 54's at Cooke - needless to say, I run stock pipes on mine. Also, drop your top gear down one tooth - it makes a huge difference on this model.

Doh

Sorry B.... What i ment was remove the can and add dishwashing soap to the fuel tank and you will get super HP.

Watch your Dragon blow bubbles!

All stock...ran the 58s and it did pretty well. 8100 at 7700' and at 9500' it would pull about 7900. The 58s are actually averaging ~58.5 grams. I may shave off a bit and I think it will be good enough without gearing down.

im also heading to cooke next week with my 08 dragon 700 163.
so i should install 58 weights, bring 56's along and change gearing to 19/42.
what about springs. are the primary and driven springs spot on, or should i change those to something else while im at it?
thanks
:beer;

These other guys definately have more experience with these 700 CFIs than I have. I think it all depends on what you are satisfied with. I think I'll be happy with some trimmed down 58s and leave the gearing. It'll do fine for me at 10K feet. I would like to thank these guys for sharing the info. Some of this stuff comes only with countless hours of R&D in the mountains....
