07, 08 M8 vs M1000

I've been looking for a sled this fall. I have narrowed it down to an M chassis. I have been riding an 05 M7 153 and really like the sled. More torque would be nice though because you really have to let the 7 wind up to make some climbs.

I ride over 10,000ft almost exclusively. I love the 7 in deep powder. I am 6'2" and 220 so I think I can throw around a well set up M1000. The sleds are almost the same price, and the possibility of getting the 1000 up to 190hp with light mods is very enticing.

One concern I have is that I see several 1000s with warranty replaced motors. Is there a problem? Is there an update that cures the problem? Can the warranty be transferred if there is one left? Am I just better off with the 8 for reliability?

Thoughts?

2010 m-8

If you get a chance to ride a new 2010 m8 you will be impressed. I ride 07 m1000 slp piped big air up grades floats boss seat and 174x2.5 and I'm 6'4" 260 which goes real good . last spring I got to ride the 2010 cats at sea level the m8 153 sno pro pulled very well climbing some pretty steep runs in about 2 feet of good snow so compared to my sled I was very impressed. I'm in south central alaska and ride sea level to 3500 feet most of the time which is nice to see what performance any sled is capable of making. I'm going to buy a m8 as a back up sled.:)

At your weight and elevation I would buy the 1000. Then again I only weigh 150 and am selling my M8 and buying a 1000.

Unless you are going to turbo the 8 get a 1000. Its easy to get the 1000 down to the weight of an 8 and like you said there is a lot of potential for more HP with the 1000.

I was contemplating an 8 last fall until I rode a 1000 and found out how much torque they have. Go for a 1000, you'll be extremely happy.

If you do a lot of mods, you'll probably want a fuel controller, then you'll have no issues with burning it up. Myself, I have an MBRP can and a larger snorkel on the airbox and those 2 things made a huge difference.

M1000 vs. M8

Having a 08 M1000 and an 09 M8 both are great sleds. I ride the m8 and am very impressed with the "over achiever" characteristics. I think and M8 with a few small mods. can be very reliable and capable sled. I also like the M1000 it's in the shop now getting a few mods. to increase power to 190-195 (not that, that matters just hope it rips hard) mark hopefully and to lighten up slightly, we will see what happens?

I think either sled is a good choice somewhat depends on what you are primary goal is with riding?

Point and shoot big climbs I would lean toward the 1000 just because of it's potential

Boon docking/small climbs the M8 is more than capable I enjoy riding it very much. I was slightly apprehensive in buying it thinking I would really notice the power difference (mainly torque) but really I didn’t. Who knows maybe the m1000 was running right or perfect or the M8 I got is one of the better ones? Who knows. Both are good though.

I am 6'5" about 280-290. if that helps.

I figured getting the 1000 was the way to go. Can't ever have too much power:) I was just concerned about reliability since the places we ride our butts into demand a dead reliable machine. I can't afford the helicopter ride out and the USFS has no sense of humor about broken machines in the back country.

The 1000's are very reliable, at least im my experince, we have 10 in our group and not one has had any engine problems. For you elevation id get a high compression head and a speed wrex pipe and maybe some porting. That would put you around 200-210 hp.

I think that For all-out performance the M8 is going to be tough to beat. 2010 M8 Mountain Snowmobile of the Year!! The more time you spend on the M8 the more you find little things that make it a great sled

I was in the same situation a month ago you are now trying to decide between the two. I ended up going with an '08-M1000. What it boiled down to for me.............their is no replacement for displacement! Get the big boy and just drop some pounds..........

M1000 vs M8

I have ridin all three M7, M8 and M1000. Owed a M7 Now riding a M8. I have heard good things about the 2010 M8 HCR but have not ridin one....Yet.

Bottom Line if you want MAX Power and High Mark get the 1000 and trick it out ( A fellow rider has one with twins and NOS!). If your OK with Good Power and Great Ride get the M8 and save a few bucks. If you get the 1000 you'll need a boondocker if you do any mod's (Y-Pipe, Pipe, can), not so with the M8. The old rule applies....Speed=$$$

Buy a M8, don't know why anyone would buy a heavy old slug like a m1000.

I have a m1000 and havent had a m8 touch it,most of the engine problems are from mods, put on a full pipe (SW or SLP) fuel controller and egts. The powerclaw is the best upgrade out there.
