06 Apex MPI supercharger need help

I have an 06 Apex that I bought used. It runs pretty rough and seems to get worse with each ride. 6000 to 8000 RPMs it cuts in and out almost throwing you over the bars. by the last day of our 4 day trip it won't even idle (+8000 feet) but will idle in the parking lot. It consumes all my fuel and my fuel cans and everyone else's fuel cans in 150 Km trip. Squeeze the throttle about 1/4 of the way open and the sled is @ 11,000 rpm. I am at 7 pounds of boost and seem to have plenty of power at WOT. Changed the plugs last night and it still seems to idle rough (up and down in rpms). If you rev it up a bit it stalls when you let off the throttle. I have no A/F guage but I would get one if recomended. I am pretty new to 4 strokes and boost but I will do whatever it takes to get this thing to run good. It is the most fun I've ever had on a sled.

Get an A/F gauge before your next outing or don't bother going. Absolutley mandatory for tuning close enough to be acceptable. Almost immpossible otherwise. And don't look for any help from MPI, its non existant.

#1 - find a Tuner for your elevation
#2 - get AFR installed
#3 - your controller is junk (good luck with MPI for version 13 I think they are on)
#4 - adjust your CO's for elevation

 Derek

I bought an 06 SC Apex this year also and had running problems to begin with similar to yours, especially the surging/throw you over the bars part. Mine would run at idle and WOT pretty well....everything in between was bad news. I got my setup from HA Boost for my altitute and spoke to Jared at MPI. I had a problem with my controller that caused the surging. Had it reprogrammed by MPI and it would not work at all. I sent back to MPI and Jared tested it, found it to be bad and sent me a new box. That solved my running problems. I am still playing with the settings a little but it runs pretty well at this point. You definately need an A/F guage to tune these things.

I am curious, you said 11,000 rpm at 1/4 throttle....how fast are you going? That almost sounds like your clutches are not upshifting and could be part of the problem, especially on using fuel. One of the problems on my sled was the slide bushings in the primary or drive clutch were hanging badly and making the clutch not open and close freely. That was the first thing I fixed, then the clutch setup, then the controller and now I have something to really work with.

Good luck and hang in there they are worth the headache once you get them going.

OK, this is the kind of advice I am looking for...

So, Who know of a good tuner in central Alberta?

Where do I get the A/F guage, and is this the same as an AFR?

I will buy any controller as long as it is the right one. Any suggestions (including contact names)?

Hmm.... CO's... I read about them in the manual. I thinkk i can set them but to what? I want to set it up to ride Revy, golden, Sicamous areas. About 6000 to 8000 feet?

How do i check my fuel pressure?

Thanks

OK, I never really checked the speed at 1/4 throttle but it is hauling pretty good ( maybe 100 to 110 Km/hr) and top end at WOT is about 145 Km/hr.
I am goin for a ride on thursday to Sunday in golden Revy area so I will get better details on this point. BTW I have a team secondary and under tunnel exhaust on it.

A/F guage gives you the Air Fuel Ratio (AFR). I run a WMS...Innovate is a big name and there are several others.. I don't know good from bad on this but most of them use the same bosch o2 sensor in the exhaust.

I would suggest calling MPI and talk to Jared about your issues, I found him to be a pretty good guy although it took two tries on the quirky controller problems.

Good luck and hopefully somebody knows a tuner in your area to get you going. My understanding on the CO setting is it is to fine tune each cylinder where the controller does the overall mapping.

I am a rookie on this stuff somewhere on the learning curve but this is the stuff I have run into so far on mine.

If your riding at 8000+ I could give you my fuel settings to compare with yours. What is yours set at?

I will be riding between 6500 and 8000 for the rest of the season. The 8000+ i was talking about was our trip to West Yellowstone. Anyways my controller numbers are

2,4,4,4,2,7 and I messed with them 1/2 a setting either way and no improvement.

Darren at E & S Motorsports in Fort Saskatchewan is doing a really good job with this set-up. Best guy to talk to in your area, IMO.
Innovate A/F gauges are complete junk, the sensors fail constantly, go to your local rod shop and get a good automotive gauge and sensor. They're a bit harder to read, but at least they last.

go into diagnostic on your gauge and check your throttle position sensor.
mine acted just like this.tps was bad. it defaults to full rich and will use tons of fuel. your settings and elevation are close to mine is your controller a gems or is it the older version? what are you running for weights in the primary? 1/4 throttle and 11000 rpm sounds like you might be bumpin the rev limiter also.if it runs good on full boost and erratic everywhere else in the throttle range id suspect the tps flooding out and running full rich and not burning all the fuel the tps is throwing into it until its clean and wide open...

Sounds good... so the TPS diag just shows bad as in TPS needs to be replaced or needs some value entered into it?

Another thought for you.....you will have problems with the way your controller is mounted, water will run down the wires and water out your box, trust me! been there done that!
Im running a turbo now and never been happier, however that was in the superchargers infancy....you NEED to talk to Darren at E&S in fort saskatchewan, he is the only one who knows how to set these blowers up.
Hes a very busy guy but its worth the wait or dollars for that matter, just to take it to him and let him do his magic.
oh and MPI, ya dont even call for advice, you will get know where!

best of luck,
B

dont forget to disconnect the fuel controller and plug back into stock wiring harness to check tps. fuel controller shows different values than what it should be. fully closed 15 to 18 fully open 95 to100 is what your readings should be.
