06 700RMk Only bout 7400 rpms

Just finished a 06 700rmk that I purchased with a rod bearing toast. Sled has 1497 miles on it very clean. Bought right, all back together and running after a new crank and pistons. Engine will only run to about 7200? plus or minus a few rpms. Its smooth and runs right up to that then seems to back off. If you ease into it its fair if you wot it, it falls back. Basically stock I installed a timbersled intake kit and an slp can. New intake boots, new fuel filter when I reassembled the engine. I also did the ves valve mod of drilling out the hole to 3/32 and removed the hoses and plugged them. Cleaned and inspected both clutches everything looked great. Whats the next step to check. I am an Auto tech by trade, so have plenty of specialty tools equip if needed. Supposedly the sled ran perfect till the rod bearing went south and stopped running. I'll was searching and will check the tps voltage first and fuel pressure. Then what....

The target RPM for these stock motors is 7400 RPM +-

What does you're clutching setup look like? It may be beneficial to drop 2 grams off your weights to get it spinning a little higher if all else is happy.

Clutch springs are NOT new. To my knowledge everthing is bone staock. I didnt realize 7400 was target. Thats low I was thinking around 8000. The engine just sounds funny, not like its missing, like just cuts back on power, seems to take off pretty good and if you pin it, it dont really bog, but cuts back the power. No engine lights or anything like that. Could very well be clutching....Seemed that max rpm on the readout was 7250? or something like that. Has a total of 6 miles since the rebuild.. When I bought this machine it needed a little cleaning, the previous owner didnt take the greatest care for it. But some real good cleaning and an almost full rebuild and shes coming around. Put this together for my sons first trip to the mountians. Just want to get some time on it and the bugs worked out. He actually started it himself today. Hes a pretty small kid at 13 and was all pumped when he got it started..:D

The correct weights and spring will make all the difference

7800 RPM is the optimum target for the 700's
What are you running in your clutch now....... weights/spring?
What altitude range do you run?

I stand corrected.... I was always under the impression the 7's wanted to turn the same as the 9s since they have the same bottom end:noidea:

I am assuming everything is bone stock as it would come from the dealer. The guy I bought it from does NO tinkering. I am not real sure what is in it for weights. At 7800 I am down a fair amount. I will look at the weights and see whats in it. I am in MN so about 900 ft. When I get it to the mountains we will be riding Island park area.

Look closely at your primary spring. It could be broken. If nothing has been changed I would get a new primary spring right away because they get weaker over time.

yep, start with seeing what weights are in it...very imp. and make sure there is no side to side motion on the weights, could have worn out bushings.

and if you leave the springs in the clutches over the summer, you will only get 1 "good" season them before they sack out and loose their tension strength. if you remove the springs, you will get 2 seasons for sure...but after that you need to replace the springs again...

springs are only $20 or so each...weight bushings are cheap...

run the black/green primary spring, weights are probably around 10-68s for you..maybe 10-70s...and use the red/pink secondary spring with 2 derlin washers...

report back after that.

good luck!!

Impressive your son could get it going - they're not friendly to pull over!!
I'm sure the above advise will fix ya up - good luck!!!

My 115 lb girlfriend could start my 900 once it had been running no big deal. First thing on a cold day though, no way.

Yeah they are a lot harder when they are cold. When i was 14, it took a lot of pulls when it was cold but i could start first pull with one hand when it is warm. Now it still takes me 2-3 pulls :ballchain:
