05 RMK 900's ?

I have noticed that there is a lot of 05 900 for sale for pretty cheap. I was woundeing if that was the year that the 900's had problems with blowing motors? Or if that was a different year?

Yup, 05 and 06 had problems. :)

Don't get fooled by the low prices... they are low priced for a reason.

'06's aren't near as bad as sled_guy makes them out to be. I tend to think the '06's dropped in value quickly because they get painted with the same brush as the '05's which from what I've read and seen had far more issues. My '06 has been great, but it definitely helps that I've been a mechanic for 28 years and also am very anal about my sleds. I tend to notice and repair very minor issues before they develope into a major problem. As good as mine has been though, I will concede that if you are not very mechanically inclined (or have very deep pockets), then a 900 is likely not the sled for you.

2005 900 AND 2006 900/700.... Read Before you Buy

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2005 900 AND 2006 900/700 (aka 755).... Read Before you Buy

I've been getting slammed with emails and PM's from new buyers or prospective buyers of these sleds.

If you are looking into buying one there is more to the purchase than meets the Low dollar figure of these sleds.

There are a lot of swinging deals on these sled, some even brand new for Sub $6000 to as low as $2500 fpr used ones.

There is a reason for this...

Simply, they ususlly take a fair investment of time and money to make them worthy.

They all need a comprehensive clutching kit, mandatory of the $170 3211115 belt, 225 lb track spring, Radiator delete, muffler (aka can), new skis, motor mounts on the 2005's, clutch balancing and re shimming for the new style belt, an airbox (I really like the Fire N Ice airbox above all others), venting, Torque arms/stops on the engine, and many other issues that need to be addressed to make them a good reliable sled.

Of the 2 years, the 2006 is a more refined/evolved design that worked out some of the bugs of the prototype year.

This is above and beyond all of the factory updates that may or may not have been done... If the sled is out of warrany and the updates have not been done, YOU will have to pay for these or do them yourself.

This sled has 19 Updates on it I think PLUS the fuel tank recals (doesnt need to be under warranty for the fuel tank recall)

Other things that need attention on these sleds is the electrical system...protecting it from chaffing...

Most people replace the spindles for easier steering as well.

I love these sleds, but I have a bit more resources at my disposal for working on these sled than the average consumer looking at a first time sled...

The 900's and to a slightly lesser degree the 700's have a tendency to blow belts... Polaris came up with the 3211115 to survive a nuclear attack but it is pricey... If you blow a belt under load on one of these sleds it can be the kis of death for the crank...

Also, the 900's and 755's are about 50 Lbs heavier than one of the newer sleds.... AFTER all the mods are done to shed the easy weight.

Many people have these sleds and love them (I'm one of these people) BUT... You need to know before you buy that you will need to make an additonal investment in the sled in order to have a good unit.

If you are not mechanically inclined, I'd recommend a pass on this...

If you are looking for a good mod platform this may be your ticket on a budget... but the resale is in the toilet... plan on keeping it for a while.

This is just a heads up based on the amount of people that have been contacting me...

There are many "newbies" on this forum with this sled that they have just purchased...

There are many other points that a lot of people on this forum will most likely chime in and add to this...

Good luck and pray for some snow!!!!!

I feel bad for anyone who buys one. We had an 05, was in the shop after every single ride. Got towed out almost every ride. Blew belts like crazy, motor replaced twice I think. So the dealer finally traded it for an 06, same problems. When I started riding I got to ride it, and the second ride I put on it, it broke down and had to get left. This was on the second motor in that sled- 2nd ride on the new motor. Someone stole it and I got a new sled. It overheated constantly, I couldn't go over 2 miles on a trail before it would overheat. It was the worst headache.

Save your money unless you really know what you're doing.

Exactly.

My 06 900's going on 1700 mi without any major blowups.

I would absolutely not get an '05 unless it had -all- the updates and a lot of work done to it. By that time, you're better off spending the $ up front for an 06 (or newer) that had a lot fewer problems to begin with.

If you can wrench (and don't mind it), they're good machines. When they run, they run GREAT; and if you ask those that have one, they all seem to love them.

These sleds have been renamed to

"RMK Herpes Edition"

Simply because once you have one,
you cannot get rid of it..........ever.

boy, with all the pics I saw of clutches snapped off.....I could never even ride a friends 900 poo. too bad, they had a lot of stuff that was making it a good sled, just dropped the ball in the reliability arena.

I bought an 05 RMK 900 151 with 300kms on it. been riding it like I stole it (I guess technically I did at $4200 Can) and now have 2100 kms on it - no problems.
I do have a can, intake, torque arm but that`s it.
Still running on the original belt

They aren`t all bad

In 2005 the polaris factory had Wednesdays off so a lot of people had what is called a "monday morning sled or friday afternoon sled". : )

But on a serious note....mine runs awesome. Must have got lucky with mine.

These seem to be a schizophrenic sled. either a lot of problems or none. I did the Carl's cycle 975 kit and have had a lot of fun with the sled. I really liked it but it was time for a new sled. I have had no problems like a lot of people but I bought the sled used and it had much of the fixes already done. I did put on the Compfusion Mounts AND the SLP torque arms.

If I cant sell it for a decent price I will probably get the head redone so I don't have to mix race gas anymore and keep it as a back-up sled.

Good luck on what ever you decide to do.

Sounds like mine, was so glad to see that piece of $hit leave my trailer.
Had the tork arm everything was done to that thing I was blowing two belts to a tank of fuel, $1200.00 in belts 400 miles two dealers still a piece of $hit.
My advice stay away from those sleds...

Buddy just picked up a 2005 with the 166" in Minnesota for $2995.
It blew a belt on the first day out, then no problems since.
He is very happy with it.
