05 RMK 900 151 with 101 miles Crank and Rods Shot!

Hello, I bought a bone stock 05 RMK 900 151 with only 101 miles on it in mint condition off of craiglist. When I got sled I checked it over, all the updates had been done and everything looked great and it ran great for 4 miles, then it locked up solid. Put PB Blaster in cylinders and got it freed up but it was still turning rough. So I had a shop tear it down yesterday, the crank and rods are out so need to replace those any ideas on why and what I am looking at for this repair? Should I do upgrade it with something aftermarket? Any help is appreciated thanks in advance.

With a sled that is 6 model years old and that low of mileage and a crank failure...sounds to me like the engine was not properly stored when not in use....not fogged during it's long down time.

When the engine is out... I'd have the injectors cleaned and tested as well as removing the fuel pump/pickup assembly to check for deposits and cracked hoses.

Take your VIN number into the local dealership and get a "Unit Inquiry" printed out (they may charge you a small fee for this) this will tell you what factory updates were done and if there are any outstanding ones... as well as if the fuel tank recall was done.

If the crank locked up like that... There is a good chance that the cases are shot too.

Polaris has a great deal on a crank kit that includes a new $180 belt, crank, New primary clutch, and gaskets.

There are Plenty of threads that you should look at in the stickies at the top of this forum... It will be more than worth your money to become a paid member here to be able to read the threads in more depth... a wealth of info from the members here.

If you are not really good with the wrenching aspects of motor assembly...and plan to keep the sled.... I highly recommend getting the Torquemaster bottom end or short block assemby from Indy Specialties... worth the money IMO.

FBF throttle cables, motor mounts, clutching/gearing and many more are easy fixes to give you better service out of your sled.

Lots of great people on here to help.

i just got done talking to indydan about my bottom end. but if you send him all your bottom end parts, he can send you a complete assembled TM1 bottom end for around 1600 bucks. thats if your case halfs are good. and that price includeds the new updated 32mm crank, new clutch, new belt and all gaskets. pretty good deal really. and it comes back to you assembled ready to bolt your cylinders on.

Welcome to the site, sorry to hear about your troubles.

I am gonna agree with Mountainhorse 100%, sounds like you got a bad case of rust in there from the long storage. There are definitely several options for you to explore to get the motor going again and make this sled work well for you, take some time and read read read.... lots of good info in the sticky threads at the top regarding setup info and great mods from mild to wild.

:beer;

Yup, I third that.
The sled was not stored right. I talked to the guys in West Yellowstone last year and they had a brand new 900 go out and do the same thing. After the sled hat sat 5 years in their storage all the seals had dried up. I try to start mine at least every other month in the off season and run it up to operating Temp.

Most likely yours had condensation inside the engine that caused some rust to form on the crank bearings. I had an indy 650 that had been sitting a couple years do the same thing to me. I rode it 10 miles before that one failed. It was a long walk back to my truck.

I'm probably going to do this to one or both or my 900's over the summer to get them ready to go for next Year. Indydan is probably the best 900 engine guy there is.

Nobody has mentioned this in this thread yet but you should upgrade your pistons to the 06 model ones while you have it apart. Your pistons and cylinders should be in perfect condition with such low miles but the 05 model pistons were a poor design. The skirts can break off and destroy your engine. The factory changed the design in 06 and this is considered the best piston available for the 900. Also make sure you cover the hole above the pullstart when you get it back together to make sure no water or antifreeze gets down into your stator and flywheel, aluminum heat tape works well for this.

mountain horse do you have part number for Polaris crank kit?

Polaris has a great deal on a crank kit that includes a new $180 belt, crank, New primary clutch, and gaskets.

Do you have a part number for this? I called my local Polaris dealer here in Mandan ND and they have not heard of it? Told me if I had part number they could check into for me.

Thanks for all the advice I do appreciate it!

These are the pistons. Do not put this motor back together without the updated pistons.
2203098 KIT-PISTON 86-86 | [Incl. 1,6,11] $99.48

Since you have an 05 it is also mandatory to install washers on the cylinder bolts. There is a Polaris service bulletin about this.

19 7556234 WSHR-FL,10X2 $2.97 (8 required)

that crank is the same thing that indy dan sells, but he adds the extra bearing to it for strength. he told me that the oem crank kit from polaris was not any stronger than the one you have currently. and that there was a good chance it would just break the pto end off again. so for 500 more bucks you get the updated crank kit, and indydans third bearing added. also, dan has the crank kits in stock, babbits would have to order it.
