Looking to buy a '05 chevy duramax. Has intake and exhaust other then that all stock motor wise. Was told that '02 and '03 were the better years but why? Any major issues with this year? Vehicle has 120K on it and is in mint shape. Price is right at 27,000 which is a bit steep for the miles.

Nice looking truck. That is a little high price for the miles your right maybe around 25k. The only major issues that people have with them are head gaskets. Would not be a bad idea to run the vin to see what was all done to the truck while it was under warranty. What kind of lift kit is it? How are the tires? Is the front end solid? Have the diffs been changed and such? Did it ever have a chip installed? I have an 04 LB7 and the reason people say they are the better years to buy is because you can do more to the trucks with having less issues.

There are better deals to be had.

I picked up an 06 with 91k miles, fully loaded except nav and DVD for 23,500 in October.

the 04.5-05s are the least desired of all dmaxs. same computer system as lbz, just a smaller turbo outlet which increases egts and cylinder pressure, which, like said above, can pop head gaskets. there are much better deals out there, but maybe its an asking price, not selling price.

Get the tranny checked - Limp mode! 5th gear clutch packs slip if towing heavy loads with a high hp chip installed, they also get hot fast.

just change the mouthpiece to the lbz one, thats the only differance other than tune between the lly and the lbz

ttt

I have an 05 this is chiped and exhaust knock on wood never had an issue 80000 miles runs awsome never been beat yet! FaTHER IN LAW HAS AN 03 100000 MILES AND HAS HAD NEW INJECTORS AND SOME ISSUES BUT ALSO RUNS REALLY WELL BOTH R GREAT MY OPINION

Thanks guys for the replies. Thats there final price way to steep truck needs tires and tires for 20" rims arent cheap!! Will keep my eyes open for better deals.

I have one of the so called least desired 04.5'. The turbo exhaust housing is larger on a LLY than a LBZ or LMM it spools a touch slower but has lower exhaust temps. The LLY uses a ECM & FICM to control the engine, LBZ & up only have a ECM no FICM Control.

To the OP. These trucks have very little issues when left stock however once ANYTHING is messed with the reliability can suffer but not always...

The early 01-02' engine had some head gasket issues, mostly due to injector failure & poor early CHIPS/TUNERS. GM/BOSCH have redesigned the injector and have fixed most of the trucks out there with warranty on the first series injectors. A simple vin check will tell you if they were done or not.

The LB7 01-04' engine had some injector issues, pretty much plan on injectors in those trucks every 75-100,000 miles & if you can't do them your self, flat rate is close to 12 hours if I remember correctly & each injector is about 375 bucks X 8. Injectors are under the valve cover on the early engines. The later engines LLY & up the injector is outside the valve cover, cuts the R&I time in half or more in some cases.

The turbo mouth piece is a big restriction & some believe is the cause of the high temps some of the LLY engines have been plagued with. I never had any over heat issues with mine in 55,000 miles but others have. It can be easily fixed as others have stated with a LBZ mouth piece or a AFE inlet.

Anywhoo the later trucks have the least issues in stock form, but also have more emissions stuff, LB7 non california has 0 emissions features, LLY-EGR & CAT, LBZ-EGR & CAT, LMM-EGR CAT & DPF, LML-EGR CAT DPF & UREA injection or (Cow Piss).

The allison can handle about 90-100 horse extra but you need to be nice to it in this range no full throttle take offs with a trailer or a bunch of 5th gear WOT runs.

If you have a good Diesel shop in your town I would recommend taking a perspective truck to them for inspection.

I bleed Duramax so if you have a question feel free to ask...

& yes the price is to high, 20-24,000 range is more realistic.

Hey I have a 2007 gmc sierra classic 2500hd, LBZ duramax, loaded with leather, tinted windows, black color, lots of stainless trim, leveling lift, mbrp muffler, 285-75r16 bfg at, mkw wheels, 49000 easy miles. It has onlly towed a small two axle flatbed atv/sled trailer and probably only towed maybe a couple thousand miles of the 49000 total. P/U is extremely clean and very well maintained and serviced. Im toying with idea of selling it and getting a 6.2 gasser. tired of 3.30 fuel, but i do love this truck. Local dealer wants it but I would rather sell myself if i decide to part with it.. If anyone interested hit me up with a price.. Oh ya its a crew cab, four door ,shortbox.

The only thing you need to know is DON'T BUY A D-MAX! hahahahahahahaha No it looks like a nice rig!

This coming from a guy who owns a 900 RMK:tsp:JK

hahahahaha My 900 will rip apart your sleds! Its all what you want, I have a cummins and love it, i had a 03 d-max and i didn't like it much. They both have pros and cons but i like the cummins more. My dad likes the d-max more so thats what he has. Im not bashing d-max. At least i don't have a yamaha!!!!!

Don,t do it. IMO that is the best chevy diesel truck ever made. Stock it never disappoints me. I hauled a 8000lb forklift up cow canyon grade north of Redmond, Oregon at 52 mph.

that gasser is gonna get sh!tty mileage.

I have an 05 LLY GMC Duramax with 6 inch lift, 20 inch wheels, AFE stage 2 cold air intake, MBRP turbo back 4 inch exhaust, Edge Juice with Attitude chip, and love it. Has about 75,000 miles on it and not a single problem.
