04 Rev Airbox Mod.

I bought a bone stock(except for a can) 04 rev last spring and have about 12 rides on it. It's running rich, (no bogging but plugs are black) & I figure its a good time to add some sort of snorkel to the air box. I was thinking of a 1" hole in the top of the tube section and running a hose with prefilter to fresh air to help it breath on deep powder days. Anybody done this sort of thing? How lean am I gona go with a 1" hole, hose, & prefilter? Is there a better place to attach a snorkel?
Thanks.:beer;:D

No way to tell how much change will result from cutting a hole in air box. I would reccomend that you get an air fuel gauge if you are going to do air box mods (or check your plugs very often at first). If it runs good why are you going to mod the air box. Does it bog in powder? Might want to go with some sort of filter system if it does. Remember that if you do decide to take the air box off or change it drastically that you need to make sure the carbs are supported otherwist the carb boots will delaminate and crack, already a big problem w/ revs.

How much oil are you using? What is the condition of the engine....compression etc...?? They were known for bad rings which may account for the state of tune. You will likely lose power modifying the airbox IMO. I would look at other options first....verifying the condition of the engine, jetting, oil consumption.... :beer;

Thanks for all your comments. The link to the doo site thread was very helpful. I knew doos ran better with the air box but had no idea the air boxes were tuned to harmonically pulse with the motor. All I wanted was to add a small supplemental air source to help it breath when the filter gets plugged on deep powder days. Even with pre filter fabric I can see filter icing is gona be a problem.
Oh, oil consumption and compression are good, DPM operational, new top end last year (previous owner) and new carb boots last month. I put 400 miles on it last spring, ran good. Plugs were dark but not fouling. I fouled 2 mag side plugs in 6 rides this winter. Both sides are running rich, (no sputtering but dark plugs) Fuel consumption is consistently a bit more than my wife’s 05 rev. I just thought it was the way I rode. If I jet down do I want to shim up my needles first before I drop the mains to keep the mid from going lean? Could something else be going on to foul mag side plugs? What mains should I be running. (6k' to 10k')

Are you running rich at WOT? ... Main Jet.

Mid throttle positions? ... needle.

Low speed? ... Pilot Jet

Overly simplistic I know but where are you running rich, maybe do some throttle chop tests to help fine tune and identify what you actually need to change.

if you drop a jet size, I would shim the needle up .020 and do a plug chop. I have a 04 800 running at sea level, the stock jets would have a lean spot in the mid (6-6900) like stated before. I droped mine to 380's with 25 pilots and stock needles with .030 shims added. Fuel screw is 1.75 apx. Only mod is a Dyno-Port pipe and TEAM Secondary. Rest motor is stock.

If you are rich it is running too rich I have leaned my wifes sled to 370 380 on mine with a can but hers runs better so I am going to try 370 on mine and watch the plugs . You will be surprised how much power you gain. there are differences in sleds dpm ect some are rich others not.

If you want to help with clogging snow get a set of upper vents with pre-filter and cut some holes in the outter airbox. I can show you what I did if you like.
I used furnace filter material inbetween the vent and airbox, seems to be working well so far.

This is a cheap mod you can do yourself for the deep pow.
All you need to buy is some hose and a SLP 2" prefilter to mount on your pod.
