04 600 HO problems

I bought the girlfriend a 04 600 HO this summer, I've been riding it the last few days and have had a hell of a time getting it started when it's hot? The motor fires on the second or third pull cold, but after riding it for an hour and stopping for lunch, it took me 15 min of pulling, choking, pulling to get it fired back up?

does it seem to run fine? possibly needle and seat sticking and flooding it out. dads sled was havin this problem. ride it, and when you tried to start it it would be flooded out and fouled plugs.

It's either the needle and seat or your joke cable is too tight. My 800 would die on me when going back down hill and it would take awhile to get it started again. The wifes 600 would not like to start after shutting it off. It would only start again by NOT having the choke and yanking on the chord for awhile.

Haven't looked at the plugs yet. I'll check the choke cable out tomorrow, i tried starting the sled with out the choke, but needed half choke to get her going again.

I have tried cracking the throttle, can't remember if it helped or not? I was trying all kinds of stuff.

than again now that i think of it i was riding with someone who had the 600 sdi and he was havin trouble startin it too. i dunno much about them. i got the 800 H.O. but pry same basic pricipals

If it has heated carbs turn off the little red valve where the coolant hose comes out of the head and goes into the carbs. The carb heaters should only be on when it is cold outside, I rarely use mine, usually when it is below zero. If you leave the valve on when the temps are warm the fuel in the carbs will either boil over and flood the engine or it will vaporize and "vapor lock" the engine, as long as you keep the engine running they run alright because you have cool fuel coming in from the tank and the coolant is circulating through the carbs.

I had the same problem with mine. It ended up being the carb heat valve. When you look on the clutch side of the moter there should be a hose from the head to the carbs. In the hose there is a red valve, if it is open this heats the carbs and makes it really hard to start once warm.

Hope its that simple.

The heater valve was open, I'm going to ride the sled again today, so hopfully all will be good?

Last season I had the same problem with my 04 800. Didn't do it all the time, just after sitting for about 15 minutes. The Red valve mentioned above was always closed. Never had to use it even in -20 temps. Plugs were brand new. I will check some of the other items mentioned above. Thanks.

running problem

Try checking the bottom of the reed boots, see if the rubber is peeling off. mine ran just like yours. i brought it to the dealer 3 times and they couldnt figure it out. ended up beeing the reed boots falling apart, i probly changed 10 sets last winter on customers sleds. all falling apart.

will do

Check your reeds there probably not sealing/closing completly when warm but do when the sled is cold. The way to check this is pull the reed cages out the next time it does not start, Also check the compresson flakey rings are low compression will make it hard to start. I worked on a 03 600 ho that had this problem and new reed cages and rings fixed the problem.

"Also check the compresson flakey rings are low compression will make it hard to start"
the early 600's had compression issues, warrenty relaced with chromoly rings
I had mine changed, if sled dies when you put it in reverse, you probably have a compression issue,

Also check the vent tube for the fuel tank. I worked on two sleds last winter that had to pull 15+ times with choke to start. After you have gone for a ride, stop, open the gas cap. Does it sound like a jar of roasted nuts opened for the first time (vacuum). If so, your vent line is pinched, possibly behind the break disk. There are also little check valves on the fuel vent. As a simple test I pulled the vent line off the tank and tested, wallaha it fixed it. Then I needed to find where the kink was (found it was kinked at the support behind the break disk).

I also would check the reed boots as they rot out from the inside. But if it runs good, starts hard. Look at the simple stuff too.

Let us know what you find, I'm currious to know.

Thanks guy's! I did notice that the fuel tank was pressurized, I'll have to check the vent tube and compression this weekend :beer;
