03 800 136" problem cutting out in powder

i am trying to help my buddy find some answers with his 03 800. he said when he gets down in the powder sometimes, and only a few feet, we dont live in the mountains, it cuts down to one cylinder. the only thing he thought is that he raplaced plugs caps towards the end of last yr season. so far he has checked his dpm, air box, and plug caps and wires, crank seal and has not found anything obvious problems. if anyone out there has some input it will all help! thanks guys

same thing..

My brother has the same problem on his 05, 800 ptek. everthing seems normal otherwise and when back on the trail runs great. wondering if it was just bad gas and swallowed some H2O. Have the snow screens on the vents as well.

Any ideas?

yea thats exactly what my buddies is like. it is fine once he gets back on the trail. i guess its possible with water in the gas but that it only runs on one cylinder while only in the powder. it seems weird to me and i have never dealt with something like this

First guess was water... second thought was that it wasn't getting air... had that happen until we put SLP filters in the dash beside the gauges... snow has a tendancy to build up in the stock filters which are up by the windshield... when that happens, the engine is sucking in warm air and really bogs and runs like crap! Check those 2 things out and I have a feeling you will be OK... I am leaning towards the filters

don't know if this'll help ya or not-but here goes....my '00 had a similar issue & it turned out to be snow melting under the warm hood and shorting across the connections inside the back of one of the plugs that are normally located (clipped) to the plastic that goes round the bars-tank etc (above the oil tank) ...i think it was shorting across the kill switch wiring enough to drop the voltage to the ignition to the point of failing-dunno.a little bit of petroleum jelly (vaseline) slathered in the connection kept the moisture from seeping into the block & solved the problem.it might be worth a shot of dielectric grease or vaseline if it helps...good luck

Check plug wires and caps and spray several coats of ignition sealer on them if needed. The steam that is made from snow on the pipe creates all kinds of problems under the hood with high voltage ignition systems.

Ive had the same problems!

I learned that after I had rolled my sled down a chute the other day.. breaking the hood, hinges and hold down bungees, that when I was boondocking later with 2 dozen zip ties and a roll of duct tape, snow was coming in thru the front and creating steam from the motor and pipe which in turn was affecting the intake.

After putting two new intakes next to my gauges and fixing the hood.. havent had any issues :face-icon-small-hap

Cheers

Mine did this the last time I rode and it wast the first time with out the windshield Im thinking air.
