02 800 efi cutting out

it will be running fine, and then while i am riding (slower speeds) as i accelerate to feather the throtlle a bit, it cuts out for a split second and then recovers. i am wondering if it could be the stator. anyone know of any other place to check????????

Have you tried disconnecting the throttle safety switch sometimes when they go bad it can have similar symptoms. I would disconnect and try it first. never really seen a stator cause issues like you are experiencing. Good luck

I have had 3 AC stators go bad. The first a 93 ext 550 would idle fine but would not take any load, soon as you gave any throttle under load it would back fire. The other two once I shut it down would not start back up no other symptoms other than taking more than 3 pulls to start when warm. 99 600 and 02 800 both EFI. The throttle saftey switch could be your problem you can just un plug it and see if the bog is gone. The other possibilty is a mid range lean spot , do you have a can or pipe on it? After that may be clutching, plug wires, voltage regulator.

kill switch

there is a 2 prong wire connector under the velcro cover where the handle bars mount with either brown-white or purple -white and black wire just unplug it .This is a real common problemwith these sleds

Clean and adjust your power valves! Inspect cables for fraying or breakage. Adjust cable to proper length using a caliper don't know the spec off hand but it is important. Most drivability problems I see are due to power valves being dirty stuck misadjusted or broken cable. Also install them correctly!!

power valve

the spec for the power valve cable is 1.51 in. They get gummed up pretty fast. Mine were both out of adjustment when I started to put them back in. I would check them, adjust, double check several times as the cable can have some slack or slip while adjusting

i got an 02 crosscountry 800 motor doing the same exact thing, its not the powervalves, cables or servo motor those are all in good working order, you feather the gas and it just falls on its face but once you get out of that flat spot in the throttle it runs amazing, no back firing or anything, its goofy.

To me, both problems sound a lot like the throttle safety switch. This is actually located in the throttle block. To bypass it, you have to find the kill switch plug. It's the three prong plug somewhere near or under the dash that doesn't have a green wire in it. It's not a two prong plug as previously mentioned. The safety switch runs off the center wire. If you unplug this plug and the problem goes away, then you can clip the center wire and plug it back in. Then your kill switch will still work normally, but you will have bypassed the safety switch.

Every one of these sleds my dad and I have has had this switch bypassed.

we replaced the safety switch on the handlebar itself where the killswitch is but there is still a little bit of a hesitation. if you clip that middle wire below the plug will it kill the safety sensor on the throttle body?

unplug it first to make sure that is the problem, but I believe we have clipped this even on EFI sleds and not had a problem.

I agree with IDcat, years back my riding group had 5 of this vintage 800, after a couple of years all had the throttle switch disconnected. rolled over in the powder and they would act up when you shoved some snow around the throttle flipper and cable. And stock short of straight crisco for oil, well pulled and cleaned the power valves at lunch breaks.

the power valves sticking though is a steady loss of top end and rpm, generally no hic ups.

Mine is doing the same thing I think..... I'll be driving along at a steady speed, and then go to really give it to her and it will act like I feathered the throttle when I didnt. Like he says, cuts out for a spit second, but then goes right back to normal. It does this very randomly for me. It wont bother for several days, then one day it might bother three times.

I have disconnected my kill switch AND throttle body switch due to prior models having the same problem and being familiar with them.

But even with that disconnected it still does the same thing. I have cleaned and adjusted my powervalves and do so a few times each season.

I didnt know if it is some EFI computer..... ?:face-icon-small-con

heh, went sledding last year, mate rolled his 04 900 EFI about 5 times. Got it back upright and pulled the cord. Sled shot off at full tilt with no one on it. managed to get about 200m before ploughing into a group of trees. He got away with busted A arms and hood. Sled came to rest with a massive branch shaving the top off his spark plugs!! Close call.

But anyway, my 900 was acting up the other week. On the trail it was so up and down but on full throttle it didnt hesitate at all. It was the TSS, so we disconnected it and its fine now.

Since my buddies incident last year I always check the throttle for snow after a rollover!!

:)
