01 800 MTN Cat track swap

I'm swapping the stock 144" track for an 151x16x2 track on my 01 800 mountain cat and looking for ideas for gearing. not sure what the sled has for gears right now, but it is stock. i ride mostly in the bighorns at around 8000 feet. any tips or experiences would help.

I did the same to my '01 MC800 and I left the stock gearing in it, but switched the track drivers from 9T involutes to a set of 8T Extros, that seems to be pretty close to where you should be. I believe the stock gearing is 19/43 and I have heard good things about the 18/44 gearing in these. you may want to try that if you're not upgrading to extros.

Although, I would highly recommend that you install extros, they help quite a bit with lowering the rolling resistance, and it's a good time to swap them out when you already have your drive axle out for the track swap. JMO

Also, you probably know this, but you need to either modify your drop arms, buy a set of SJ drop arms, or get a larger idler wheel so the track can clear the top of the drop arms.

i was planning on moving the skid back and down to allow for the longer track. was think dropping the back 2 inches and the front 1 inch and moving the skid back 3 inches. maybe i'm way off base in my thinking, but i guess that's half the fun in it. i haven't taken anything apart yet, still have to get the Bighorn snow melted off from last weekend.

Do this:

You move the suspension back and use 10-tooth drivers.

Stock is not 19/43 but it is a prefferred setup. I think stock on most sleds will be 20/39.

If you go with Extroverts you will need to trim your front rails as well to make them fit. That is what I did and I trimmed as well as using the King Kat rail tips. They are notched to help prevent track stabbing. I would run and anti-stab kit to be on the safe side.

I think you could skip the drivers. In my opinion when you change drivers you open the clutching can of worms and have to start tunning all over again. We have been doing set backs for a few years now and have good luck. We have been dropping the front .5 or 1 inch and dropping the back 1 to 1.5 inches. If you drop the back to much you wont get any weight transfer. We just did one a week ago and move the front hole down .5 and the back hole down 1.5 . We moved the skid back 3 inches and sucked up the remaining .5 inch in the track adjustment. Too far back and again you have weight transfer issues. Good luck. Buying extensions is too easy and does nothing for the trenching issues on this sled.

would setting the skid back work for say going from a 151-159 or maybe a 162

Not really. It is a pretty simple formula. If you search there are a number of sites that will tell you your ratios when running different drivers and gear ratios.

The 10-tooth drivers are basically a King Kat set-up. It also slightly changes your attack angle.

I just put a 159 X16 on my 02. I went with 8 tooth extros which gives you enough room for a 2.31" paddle. I used the stock gears which are 20/39. You won't win any races but it sure pulls a lot harder. I did not have to change clutching from what i already had.

As someone else said you will need at least 6.38" top idles so the 16" track will ride over the tsl's. Also I used extensions but I would recomend just finding a set a 151 rails. If you get 04 or newer rails you can run 8" rear idlers

PM me if you have any ?'s
