What's the difference between a timbersled and a snowbike? Timbersled sounds cooler.

Timbersled is to snowbike what Kleenex is to facial tissue. No difference, except that snowbikers who aren’t riding Timbersleds don’t like to call their snowbikes Timbersleds.

How well would a ’17 KX250 4-stroke do with a sled kit? I see a lot of 450s.

Great question, we get that a lot. The short answer is this: Any cc full-size dirt bike will run in the snow with a track kit, and the performance gaps will be just the same as they are on the dirt.

We’ve build 500, big-bore 450, stock 450, stock 350 4-strokes and a few 300 2-strokes. We’ve ridden stock 250 4-strokes. Every bike did just fine. Did the 250 keep up with the 450? It went most everywhere the 450 went, it just took longer and sometimes more creative lines to get there. Think of riding the sand dunes. Will a 250 rip up the steepest climb neck-and-neck with a 450? No. But can a 250 get around and be a fun bike at the dunes? Yes. Same goes for snow. Your 250F will get around just fine with a track kit.

Would a die-hard sled and summer street bike be guy happy on one? I feel like the lack of power at elevation would be disappointing.

Power is relative. If you’re only comparing a 450cc snowbike to a turbo 800 mountain sled, you’ll be disappointed. But looking at the snowbike from the perspective of what you can do differently on the mountain, you’ll be happy. But there’s a reason why most sledders stick with sleds—the thrill of 150-plus horsepower is hard to beat.

Why haven't one of the magazines done an article on one of the snowmobile-powered snowbike mods? Like Les Blockers?

Les’ creation is pretty gnarly and we would be thrilled to test it, but it’s a one-off, hand-built machine that has little bearing on the direction of the snowbike industry. Snowmobile-engine-powered snowbikes seem like the winning ticket to a sledder looking at the sport from the outside in. But the attraction to snowbiking is where it can go due to its footprint, not its horsepower. That said, if we ever get the opportunity to ride Les’ mod bike, we’ll jump on it.
