Style Gets The Looks
Still, when it comes to building a true Custom Sled like this Yamaha RX-1 Turbo, it's the style that gets the looks. When completed, the RX-1 became a multi-color turbo RX-1. The Yamaha paint scheme was designed utilizing the two feature colors of the RX-1 blue and red, along with silver which was the color for the limited RX-1. The "torn graphic" DuPont two-stage paint design was laid out by Dale Behre of Dale's Custom Auto. Dale's award-winning designs have won the "PPG Best Use of Colors" award at the NSRA/ York, PA, street rod shows for seven years in a row. Now that's consistency.
It was left to Ed Barrett to make key changes to the stock Yamaha RX-1 blue seat. He replaced the black seating area with a silver progressive roll and pleated design that blends into the silver pearl paint. Added touches included embroidering the Yamaha name in chrome thread with a red outline on each side of the seat along with electric blue piping between the silver and Yamaha blue.
From the Yamaha accessories catalog came additional touches such as the red front belly pan cover, rear flap assembly and the optional aluminum gas cap.
Ride Enhanced
The front suspension's performance was upgraded to enhance handling with the addition of quality Ohlin's shocks from Ohlins, USA. The front suspension also received show quality chrome plating from Bar Plating in Meriden, CT, along with a set of super "trick" billet aluminum spindle housings from Micro-Belmont Engineering. They also received the Bar chrome finish. Working with Kevin Metheny at USI, Bob used the latest USI red ProAction skis to highlight the customizing of the sled's front suspension.
Under the seat, a 136-inch Camoplast track with 1.25 profile was outfitted with Woody's traction control products and wrapped over a FAST M-10 136" assembly. The rear suspension also was upgraded with Ohlin's premium shocks.
With 220 horsepower on tap at the throttle, this Bender turbocharged Yamaha not only looks "sweet," it's plenty fast on the lake or trail.
